Where I was, such people tended to call themselves, or be called, demons, never gods. I never had much experience with gods, but the ones people spoke of seemed beings to be respected, and feared.

I once met someone who was an actual vessel for a demon once, that was interesting. Unfortunate for him, though. A child that became a wild beast when someone important to him was harmed.
