Fishin' in the stream of consciousness (all-purpose, no topic chat thread)

I passed this plant on the way home, and googling spiky plant didn't help. Anyone know what it is?

Without seeing the actual plant or knowing whereabouts you are, I can only guess. Looks kinda like a seedpod?

I would have guessed teasel, but they have a spindly calyx, and that looks very compact. Can you confirm the non-pinnate leaves in the pic belong to the plant?

EDIT: I think have a positive ID! Datura innoxia? File under 'pretty but toxic'.

 

I live in New Jersey if that helps? And the leaves don't look the same. They're rounder (kind of heart shaped) and a lighter green. Also it's s shorter plant than I am, so under 3 feet tall.

Edit: maybe I should take a picture standing further back next time.

 

This one looks closer, maybe that's it. I'll look at it again in the morning and compare.

Edit (again sorry): I googled datura and that's definitely it, I recognize the flowers!

 

Oh neat, I never knew datura looked so much like a chestnut.

 

...what kind of chestnuts do you have with spikes as big and solid as datura pods??? (this is the kind of chestnut I know, we're lucky enough to have big ol american chestnuts surviving round me)

 

@Loq I have no idea, never eaten them, but the spikes are shorter and firmer than those appear to be, and less densely-spaced than either those or the datura.

(Some poking around on google suggests it might be the horse chestnut that I'm familiar with. The fact that it's poisonous probably explains why it tasted so bitter the one time I tried taking a nibble. (I was not as sensible a kid as I thought I was.))

 

I used to love conkers (horse chestnuts). They're so glossy and smooth. I must have peeled hundreds of them as a brat and lost 90% of them before they could harden properly. Never was much good at playing conkers.
