Speaking of fan fiction, I don't see a dedicated fic rec thread yet! I browsed this forum and checked in search; if I missed one, please reply so I can delete this and switch threads.

Lately I've been in a major crossover mood, especially where elements of one canon are fused into another to make an AU. In particular:

In which the characters of the Hobbit in a very closely parallel setting to that of FFX. Gandalf brings Bilbo out of the protected Shire to help Summoner Thorin in his quest to bring down Sin. A few of the swaps utterly delighted me, and while the /direction/ of their journey usually mimics that of the game, their reasons and resources sometimes don't.

The first few stories more closely parallel the books, with the relevant difference that daemons make. The variance increases through the books, especially making some of the characters sidelined in the books more prominent and contributive to the plot.

It is fun, full of the sorts of details that bring the combined tone of the canons to life, and tragically not yet complete. I particularly like the humor, the references, and how it connects certain mysteries of the WTNV setting.

The Hobbit setting&characters / Assassin's Creed inspiration

In which the safety of the Shire is partly due to the vigilance of the Rangers outside, and partly to a secretive order of hobbits that most know nothing about, including Belladonna Baggins. Takes place mostly over a decade or two around the Fell Winter, focused on Bilbo (and eventually a dwarf he rescues---not Thorin.) I like how plausible I find the existence of such an order and how it's fit into the world of the story.

"Shadows in Starlight" on FF.net by Vathara
Ruruoni Kenshin / Star Wars mix

In which the setting of RK is made into a recently re-discoveree Rim World of the Star Wars setting, settled and lost thousands of years before, with an unusually high number of locals strong with the Force and their own practices regarding it. Follows an Obi Wan who only faked his death to follow Qui Gon's cryptic advice to go there. It takes a lot of bits and pieces from both canons, tossing out details that don't fit, to make an enjoyable hodgepodge of conflicting ideals and methods. Obi Wan's presence adds as many complications as benefits for the RK crew, so it doesn't significantly overbalance things in their favor.
Also explores a few of the tropes Vathara uses a lot: different and conflicting interpretations of honor, expedience, and loyalty. If this is of interest, I can also happily chat about Vathara's "Embers" ATLA fic or the RK/ Gargoyles fic or the RK/Bleach fic...

I can only think of one right now, but here goes.

Untimely Ripped: Homestuck. Gen/family fic, focused on Aradia and Damara. Humanstuck. Based on a kink meme prompt I myself posted. Warning for suicide (as a major, integral theme) and some very frank discussion of severe depression. Very sad, but ultimately very hopeful as well.

Spoiler: Synopsis

Aradia and Damara are sisters. Six months ago, Damara killed herself, causing Aradia to fall into a depression of her own.

That is, until she buys a used spellbook on a whim and discovers a spell for resurrecting those who died before their time.

In a fit of desperation, she goes for it. Much to her surprise, it works. Everything should be fine, right?

There's just one problem: Damara really doesn't want to be back.

Okay I'm finally here and able to do thing.

First I should say that I at one point assembled a reclist for Homestuck nostalgia fics that got around tumblr fairly well. I'll also happily second Daemorphing up there.

Then there's my obligatory Tales of the Abyss fanfic recs, which probably everyone has read by now in that fandom anyway but whatever. Nezach is a canon divergence midgame and a marvelous dose of comfort fic. Reflections (Not complete on AO3, for some reason idk what the author is doing???) is a much earlier divergence, and a full game AU.

Then on another note, I've got one Kingdom Hearts rec, which I'm not biased about at all (I was the wall the author threw things at to make them stick). (i don't need you to) Worry for Me is a Birth By Sleep era AU, Vanitas-centric, which I should warn comes with some child abuse warnings.

I feel a little embarrassed to link a Glee fanfic (it was a guilty pleasure show of mine up through the 3rd season when it went to hell), but this is one of my Fave Fanfics Of All Time :

It's a 10-parter and semi-long, and I don't think it really requires much knowledge of the show, the characterization is pretty blatant as is and it diverges from show plot very very quickly. Also it's femslash with feels, which is the way to get me to like any fanfic.

 

I have this fantastic, "What if someone from our world ended up in Thedas?" fic. Like it actually tackles issues of the person not speaking the language, looking completely out of place, etc. It's also hella long, but it's really good! And I know it's tagged "Explicit" but there' literally only one very short sex scene in one of the later chapters.

I feel a bit silly reccing one of @Vast Derp's fics here but all the corpses stare back is one of my favourite HS fics of all time and the one that really made me love Damara. It's gruesome and horrifying and perfect.

The Spirit of Redemption by Myetel; Mass Effect

Very, very long Mass Effect AU set after the second game. TONS of (very well-done) OCs, is more about the Mass Effect universe as a whole than individual characters. I often legitimately forget it is not canon. (I choose to believe ME3 was a fever dream Shep had and then she woke up and this happened.) Gets very Babies Ever After, and if you're like me you'll be polyshipping everybody halfway through, but is an overall enjoyable read. Touches on stuff like sexual violence and gender issues (mainly wrt the asari, natch), but basically all of the targeted violence is about what species they are/what species they're sleeping with. (Which I tended to take as massive metaphors, personally.)

Boys by Casey V.; Kingdom Hearts

Warnings: Rose-tinted 90's nostalgia, boy/boy situations, the use and abuse of several cliches, excessive presence of flannel, Riku driving, Sora expressing badass-ocity, grungerock, recreational drug use and references to stoner culture, language, conveniently placed trees, cheerleaders in glitter makeup, people who know the alma mater, teenagers,smoking in the boys' room, fistfighting in the boys' room, and more to be added, probably.

It's a high school AU, but in the 90s! HSAUs are already a guilty pleasure of mine, and it's SO HARD to find well-done ones. This is exceedingly well done, however, and in-character and lovely. Features Axel/Roxas and Sora/Riku, as well as a few other pairings mentioned in passing. A few OCs, but they're not at all the focus; mostly family members that went unmentioned/unnamed in the games. Lord knows the KH cast doesn't need padding.

Did you read Shoebox Project? (You should have.) Do you remember the letters and the notes passed during class? This is that, but with Gandalf and Saruman, basically narrating the events of The Hobbit. Many, many giggles had. So far includes The Hankerchief Files and the start of The Durin's Day Files.

(seriously, I'm gonna make one more specific rec but she's fantastic) "In which Molly Hooper gets a job, gets a degree, breaks a heart, has her heart broken, falls in love, keeps a secret, saves a life,runs a morgue, falls apart, pulls it together, and finds exactly what she didn't know she was looking for--not necessarily in that order." It's got sex scenes, one of which is uncomfortable-by-design, and mentions of violence. It's been a while since I read this one, so apologies if there's anything glaring I didn't mention.

There's a long author's note beforehand that explains her reasons for writing it and includes some warnings. Santana-centric, set after the episode "MashUp". I haven't watched Glee in years so I'm just going to assume this is canon.
