And people like this get so fucking upset at the notion that Kylo might do a redemption in the next two films, too. It's fucking ridiculous. Anakin, killer of many many kids (before he became Vader, even, at the Tusken raider village, because some people like to draw a hard line between Vader's crimes and Anakin's crimes, like they're not the same fucking dude), tortured Han in Empire Strikes Back canonically for no fucking interrogation purposes, just cause he'd pissed him off, at best complicit in the destruction of Alderaan, he's good to go. We feel for his plight and it's so beautiful and moving that he managed to make his way back to the light, but Kylo? How can you expect us to buy that a dude like that can change for the better???? and i disagree that Kylo would look at how Ani is in the prequels and be insulted. Like, the dude talks to granddad's skull all about his struggles and perceived weaknesses, he'd be fucking thrilled to know Anakin struggled like how he did and still managed to be a powerful, fearsome warlord. Kylo's a bad fanboy who hates RotJ, but he loves the prequels.
Also tortured Leia in ANH. For interrogation purposes, but most of the people talking about how Kylo is the worst person in the world and must die horribly like to point to him mind-probing Rey (and Poe, but he is often inexplicably forgotten) for interrogation purposes as a sign that he's pure evil.
Yeah, I'm not forgetting about Leia, but goddamn the thing in ESB just struck me so hard. I'd never heard about it, and knowing that Vader eventually got his redemption, it was like. Wow, how the hell are they gonna address this fucking. Senseless goddamned torture for shits and giggles. Vader might not have liked being under the Emperor's command, and Anakin in the prequels definitely doesn't like what Palps has him doing. You can see him fucking crying while killing the separatists and the kiddos and such. But full grown Anakin who'd been a warlord for a while, he grew into that kinda sadism. He went from being the kind of guy who could justify doing awful things "for the greater good", to the kind of guy who does awful things because it feels good or is convenient. I fucking love Anakin, but he was a bad goddamned dude.
i thought that torturing han was for the purpose of luring luke to cloud city? noooot that that's a good or justifiable reason, i just didn't think it was quite at the "for shits and giggles" level ...but then that might be a fanon interpretation and not actually canon i don't even know at this point
That's possible! The thing I remember most clearly is Han and Leia and Chewie being all confused about what he wants, cause he didn't ask Han any questions, just hurt him. I thought their capture was the thing that was supposed to lure him, and the torture and freezing Han in carbonite were more because seriously, fuck you kids for giving me the runaround. It's entirely possible I'm wrong about that.
Huh, so it looks like Luke was headed for Cloud City before Vader even started torturing Han. Which doesn't mean the torture wasn't meant to attract him, but. It didn't. Their capture was enough danger to make Luke come for them without the torture.
HELLO YES I HAVE A GRIPE!! The Voltron fandom harassing Bex Taylor Klaus (who voices Pidge) on tumblr and twitter over some stupid jokes she made makes me so mad, because she has a level of engagement in the fandom that hardly any voice actor does, way more than she has to do, reblogging fan art and responding favorably to headcanons and answering asks, and has overall been really incredible and sweet... but she makes one "Sheith is real" joke on an Instagram photo of the voice actor's shoes, and she's getting an incredible amount of vitriolic hatred, calling her an abuse apologist and a pedophile... and on the other side of things, there's an entire blog devoted to reblogging Bex's stuff with homophobic, sexist, antisemitic comments so like... good job being on the same side as that person, guys.
I feel like the Voltron fandom could be really fun if everyone hadn't decided to turn it into the battlefield of their latest crusade.
*accidentally puts "honestly" twice* *edits it because I am so uncomfortable with m own repetition* You're totally right though. Especially giant cat robots.
SNARL It's so fucking garbagey that someone would actually seriously say that Finn, who was kidnapped and trained from childhood to be fucking cannon fodder and still goddamned managed to get out of the FO before even firing a single fucking shot for them, has any sort of hand in what the FO did/does. Fuck off, fuck off entirely. Finn feeling guilty about where he's from doesn't make him actually guilty of any goddamned wrongdoing. Like, jesus, just say you don't wanna see a redemption arc, don't tell me fucking Finn's tainted by association and needs to redeem himself from the great and terrible crime of being goddamned kidnapped and raised as part of a slave army. Fuck off.
... Heeeeee... didn't have a chance at redemption. He does not have a clear enough picture of reality to do that. He thought that he was redeeming himself by killing his father, because he's been brainwashed. Did you not notice him thanking Han before he ran him through? That is some warped shit going on there! Not only that, the parallels are there for Ren to mirror Vader's storyline. Vader killed Obi Wan at the same climax-point as Ren killed Han. This to me suggests they're setting up a similar redemption arc to Anakin's in the original trilogy, and I for one am hoping they pull off something more convincing than "Oh yeah he did all that, but that one time, he didn't kill his son!" Basically, fucking forgive me for wanting something a little more complex in a movie villain than Snidley Whiplash with a laser sword.
I demand fucking redemption arcs for all the Jedi then. Oh fuck Mace Windu didn't get one? Well he's then an evil slaver fuck him. FUCK HIM. Repent for the crimes of the Jedi Order of forever be evil kidnapping slavedriving fucks.
I don't get how people like this want Kylo's arc to go. Like, where the fuck does he go from here that's emotionally satisfying and doesn't make Han's death meaningless? And even accepting that people want him to descend further into darkness throughout the next two films, I don't understand how some people seem to genuinely believe that that's what's been set up in TFA. You know, we have a convenient visual shorthand for people succumbing fully to the dark side. If they wanted to show that killing Han made him irredeemably evil, then they woulda given Adam Driver some yellow contacts and a surge of power that lets him handily defeat our heroes, who are saved in the nick of time by outside intervention. Yunno, so that our villain remains a credible threat in the future. Cause when the hero leaves our Big Bad lying bleeding in the snow in the very first movie of a trilogy, it kind of fucks up the tension of later battles. And also, there's been some quibbling about how they don't wanna recast Leia after Carrie Fisher's death, so if Kylo doesn't get his shit together by the end of this thing, then we could very well end up with the entire Solo-Organa line of the family dead. That'd be. Grim. Even if Rey Skywalker ends up being a thing and the whole family line isn't eradicated, it's still a pretty unhappy end.
I love everyone in this bar. @unknownanonymous - knowing Temple was a villain in canon makes so many things make so much more sense for me. It doesn't help Ford of course. Gripes: Gravity Falls fans who don't understand that screwing up someone's college admission in 1969 is a serious betrayal because it would get you sent to Nam. Where you can actually DIE. Gravity Falls fans who think you're a terrible person if you don't want to stick to the inadvisable and incredibly unrealistic life plan you and your twin brother came up with when you were twelve. I always want to ask them if they're keeping all the promises they made when they were 12. Gravity Falls fans who insist that Stanford Pines MUST BE aro/ace because he says he doesn't understand how romance is supposed to work (in between moaning about how girls don't like him and he doesn't ever get to have a romance) and not just because they want to write him that way for Reasons. Gravity Falls fans who insist that Stanford Pines MUST BE Kinsey 6 gold star gay despite the fact that he whines about girls and not just because they want to write him that way for Reasons. People who ship Rick Sanchez with Ford Pines because they're both old mad scientists who travel between dimensions and ignore the fact that they would absolutely loathe each other after approximately 5 minutes of conversation (that said, anyone who wants to write them having prank wars and platonically fucking up each other's shit, I am so there for you). Gravity Falls fans who think Stanley Pines can do no wrong (in the second episode, he tried to get the kids to help him counterfeit money okay?) Don't get me wrong, I adore Stan, and there are whole bits of WT that are basically the two brothers unpacking and fixing their shit, but it's THEIR shit, it's not all Ford's shit, and it's based in family dynamics that are older than they are. The fact that all the people in Watch Dogs fandom who are willing to write het fic about Wrench think he's a dominant when he can barely even talk to girls, and why is there always a pregnancy scare? (If you would let Wrench get you pregnant without being in a poly pile with at least one other stable adult, you probably shouldn't have children either.) The entire Steven Universe fandom oh G-d The fact that the last two Harry Potter books even exist.
