Mathy friend was explaining by analogy how immensely wrong someone's argument related to some fairly high-level math stuff was.

 

Okay, that context makes me feel better.

No one can explain what gunch is, you have to experience it for yourself....

Seriously, though, it arose in the kintsugi discord and several linguistically-inclined nerds who use and understand the term have been unable to define it. If I had to try... "something that causes cognitive disconnect like humor, but isn't actually funny, and makes you feel frustrated or something instead." It's sort of like, if you start at things that make you actually laugh, and move toward puns, but then you keep going past puns out the other side to somewhere more upsetting, there you will find gunch.

 

Huh. I think I may exist in gunch space.
