She reminds me of my parents' dog Missy. Except not a Boston Terrier.

  15. yeah it's partially that you can't see anything big in frame with her to get a sense of scale. but black and tan is a very common coloration throughout a variety of breeds of all sizes and groupings, and also how she's built is wrong for a rottie even if she was big enough for that- see how slender she is? i'm not doing this to be condescending btw i just love dog id and would be happy to words at you about it/confirm deny any guesses you have on these guys. shelter dog breed id's definitely hardmode though. so is doing it just from pics.

  16. she's got a big wide head and a tiny noodle body, lol, and she DOES NOT APPROVE of being in the shelter. i'm the only one who's coaxed her out of the kennel without having to pull her out so far i think??? which was mostly cuz i ignored her for a while and ate a sandwich in front of her kennel so she could see how few fucks i gave.

there's a much bigger pup at work who has those goofy eyebrows and she loves bein' pat
...I basically only talk to the dogs at work

and please explain away! I can like, tell if a dog is probably husky-ish because my aunt had/has a Lot of weird husky mix dogs, and I can usually see beagle-ness, and that's the extent of my dog knowledge

  19. when you're doing breed ident, conformation/how the dog's put together and behavior mean more than color, though color has a place in ident too. like, if you're trying to decide if a dog is a lab or not, and it looks pretty labby in terms of how it's put together, the type of coat it has, how it behaves, etc and it's not chocolate, black, or yellow, then it's a mix. yellow (genetically e/e red) is a masking color, so a lot of genetic colors can hide behind it- for labs, tanpoint/black and tan and brindle. there's some garbage about charcoal/silver labs, but the dilution gene allowing for those colors comes from weimaraners, which means mix. or you see a blue bully-type dog in a shelter- it's unlikely to be an american pitbull terrier/apbt, though blue is present in the breed, because it's not a common color and the apbt community is as a whole very mindful of where their dogs end up, so it's much more likely to be a bully breed mix of some sort. a lot of providing a decent ident on a dog is keeping the various traits of various breeds in mind, being aware of what's common in your area, and a willingness to be wrong. because a lot of times when you're dealing with mixes the dogs don't look like 50/50 perfect combos of the parent breeds. for instance, i recently saw what i thought was a small german shorthaired pointer come through the intake room- but when her owners came and picked her up from doggie jail they told me that she was actually a labxspaniel. i'll include a pic of a gsp and one of ellie mae to illustrate my point.
