I got a new pigeon yesterday, and we are already in love. I'm naming her Lysithea - all my pigeons are named after moons of Jupiter. She's a classic old frill, and she's unbelievably cute and sweet. ^v^





She has a rakish little eyebrow marking on one side:

 

Dem toes! Random question, @Greywing , but do you only keep your pigeons as pets? As in, do you show them, or eat their eggs or anything?

 

They are simply pets. Callisto (my NY Flying Flight) and Lysithea (the new Classic Old Frill) could place well in a show; Adrastea is overmarked and stands incorrectly for her breed (old Dutch Capuchine), plus she has a healed broken wing that hangs lower than her normal wing.

Lysithea was actually in a show when I bought her (she didn’t place), and was Champion COF at one other show!

Their eggs are quite small and they only lay 2 at a time, less than once a month. I’ve cooked them before but usually I don’t bother.

Eventually I might start showing, but shows are stressful for them and there’s always a risk of getting parasites/adenovirus/bacterial infections if someone else brings a sick bird. Callisto in particular would be VERY scared and unhappy at a show.

Pigeons are wonderful creatures and can be great pets, so I’m always happy to answer questions about them.

(He was an escaped pet who looked at our house with five cats and went "ah yes, people who can take care of me". He has since been returned to his actual momma, but he was hanging on our porch for a while.)

 

my friend now has a deaf/blind cat. when she falls off the bed after misjudging a jump she will yowl till you come help her, and she makes the "PRRT?" noise any time you touch her. truly a sweet bean.

 

A good kitty with a pretty, inquisitive face, I hope she's not too distressed when she misjudges jumps

 

she settles right down when touched and back on track. c: also a bonus: her name is Pearl.

 

Kitty trumpet! I love cats who play the kitty trumpet openly and proudly!

 

now i don't technically have a pet to show you guys, but i do have my new 10gal aquarium i set up tonight that's going to house a betta once it cycles
