...what even the hell. How is it "entitled white boy" to wake up in the middle of the night and find your uncle, who is also your teacher, who is supposed to be taking care of you and guiding you, who your parents entrusted your care to, standing over you with a lethal weapon, and freak out? Methinks those folks are reacting less to what was actually in the movie and more to their own preestablished idea that Kylo Ren is The Evil of Privilege(TM).

In regards to Luke's horseshit, that sort of shit is why Jacen is considered villainous. It's why a lot of people hate the Jedi Order as a whole. I'm not sure why Kylo Ren is supposed to positively respond to things when that sort of shit is aimed at him.

And yeah I definitely agree that it's less people reacting to the text and more to their own fanon interpretations of what Kylo Ren is. Similar to some of the freakouts about Luke being OOC. Though that later thing also has decades worth of EU material working against people's willingness to accept it, I guess.

I dunno! I expected people to be mad about Luke doing the do, even if it was just a second of murderous intent and he wasn't actually gonna go through with it, but I did not expect people to just. Decide that it didn't happen, and that Ben destroyed Luke's temple for literally no reason whatsoever, right there on the big screen, what a whiny little shit.

But that would mean admitting their initial judgement of Kylo Ren as a character was not canon. :::PPP

Like, from just TFA, I can get where the "he's an entitled privileged white boy school shooter" reading could have come from? With the "you'll give me what I want" stuff in particular. But it doesn't hold up well past the surface reading, especially with the external material establishing that Snoke had been screwing with his head since childhood. TLJ just cements that the tragedy of his character was never meant to be "he had everything he needed and that made him decide he deserved everything he wanted," it's that people were afraid he'd become a monster, so he decided to become a monster in self-defense, because at least if he's Snoke's pet monster that means someone values him.

Okay, no, fan; maybe you have a point with the timeline but you cannot argue that Aranea couldn't have been behind Gamzee's behaviour because she was all about consent before Vriska corrupted her. She approved of Beforan culling, which involves taking away the autonomy of the supposed lesser for their "own good", and idolised a rapist pirate! Okay, seriously genuinely pissed off about this now.

"It'd be cool if Kylo were lying about Rey's parents being negligent nobodies who abandoned her because they were shitheads, and episode IX revealed that he and Rey are actually sibling!!" no it wouldn't be, it'd be fucking dull and pointless. It wouldn't open up a single new story opportunity and would shit all over previously established themes for the sake of appeasing idiot fanboys' boners for reducing the new characters to My Favorite From the OT, The Squeakquel.

ESB revealing that Vader was Luke's father was iconic because it drastically shifted his and Luke's dynamic, and it changed how the audience perceived both those characters enough that they'd be willing to buy that a dude who'd previously been nothing short of monstrous could be worth the hero's compassion and forgiveness. Rey and Kylo being related would have none of that punch, especially not now that TLJ already shifted their dynamic from straight up enemies to skype pals who had a messy breakup and or whatever the fuck. "Hey Rey, remember when we did all that bonding and shit, and we learned each other's tragic backstories and started empathizing with each other's struggles and I listened to you talk about this deeply personal spiritual experience you had and assuaged your fears about being alone and unwanted, but neither of us was willing to compromise our values, so we still ended up on opposite sides of a war? Well, turns out you're my sister, too! Cool what depth that went and added to our dynamic, huh? Just like that!"

Fuck me, Rey Solo is the worst theory.

Yeeeah, and also: another reason they did what they did is that the ESB reveal is now so famous and iconic that the INSTANT Rey showed up not having parents, EVERYBODY in the fanbase immediately started speculating what OT character she was the child of. This was the only thing they could have done that would actually be a twist, and it makes for a point of reversal and contrast with the previous movies, while still resonating with them. Doing it this way also allows that expectation on the part of the audience to play into our perception of Rey's character; if everyone's at least half expecting a reveal that her parents are important, powerful people who had some mysterious but logical reason to leave her on Jakku, it's harder for people to say she's stupid or irrational for believing they totally had a reason and are coming back, or to hold her desperate desire to know who they are against her. And it parallels Luke and Vader on a different level: the realization that a parent who they'd never met but believed was a good person wasn't.

That's why I'd been hoping for this since TFA, and rolling my eyes at the various Rey Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi/whatever theories, because all of those seemed hollow and by the numbers and "Oh, we need a dramatic parentage reveal, because it's Star Wars, therefore we need Dramatic Family Reveals." The only one I'd ever seen that seemed at all interesting from a story perspective was a friend's pet theory that she was a clone of Anakin, and that one loses some of its narrative potential if Kylo Ren is moving beyond desperately imitating Vader as his main way of getting through life.

And I have yet to see anyone pointing out what is CLEARLY the biggest, most egregious, most un-Star-Wars-like problem with the new trilogy:
We're two movies in and there has not been one single dismemberment! A solid 4:50 of running time total and nobody has had a hand chopped off!
    FOR SHAME! :::PPP

I was fully expecting Kylo to lose at least one limb in TLJ but instead they just slapped an eye scar on him and called it good. He didn't even lose the eye :(

I am still holding out hope for my theory that his lightsaber will eventually explode and take both his hands with it though

  12. LadyNighteyes

I was absolutely expecting that to happen since TFA, and was surprised it didn't happen in this one. Especially with the degree that his lightsaber is a metaphor for his mental state, and lightsabers in general are Symbolic in the new trilogy.

Incidentally, my sibling tells me they did not see the "rip the lightsaber in half" thing coming because they were SURE something was going to take off Kylo's hand. :::PPP

Does anyone have any tips on emotionally making the solid divide between bits of a work you love and bits you hate? I want to take the characters minus parts of their development I hated and bits of the magic system and ignore the plot and I keep feeling like I "can't" do that.

Spend any amount of time in a comicverse fandom and you’ll get into the habit of picking and choosing bits of canon pretty quick :P

What fandom are you talking about?

Homestuck. I'm basically caliginous for the plot.

I feel like it's prolly best to keep in mind that all fiction is equally made up. I don't think there's anything wrong with picking and choosing what bits of a work you wanna play with anymore then there'd be something wrong with, idk, an adaptation of Frankenstien set in a space station orbiting Mars and they're all furries or whatever. At the end of the day it's all fakey fake made up bullshit, yunno?

And AUs are basically free for all zones. Pick whatever you want, because canon compliance isn’t the point.

I think I'd feel better if I had some more complex justification than "AU hahaha". Tell myself it's reincarnation?

I mean, my first thought with that would be “time to create a complex theological system to explain and justify the reincarnation of individuals within the context of the SBURB universe procreation system outside of scratched settings” which... might not be the direction you’re going for. But ultimately, you don’t need more justification than ‘AU lol’ because generally that’s about as deep as most readers are going to look into it.

And Homestuck explicitly allows for infinite parallel alternate versions of the same characters anyway.
