I just think there's a difference between individual trolls caring how they dress and the culture as a whole caring.
The trolls we know seem to mostly be exceptions to the norm. Karkat may very well be right, but the trolls from Homestuck include a ghost, a mutant, a diurnal Jade Blood fashionista, a blue blood with psionics, another blue blood with super strength and the only fuchsia of her generation (that we know of). Also I don’t interpret his pants as sweats? But that’s just me.

I can't say for certain but I suspect it's a reference to Aaron Diaz, who does the webcomic Dresden Codak. Spoiler: Unnecessary Details I'm not about to start too much shit-stirring about this guy (there's plenty out there already) but I will say that he really likes drawing the female protagonist. He especially likes drawing her ass. And her cleavage. And sometimes he draws inspiration from 'amputee pin-up art'. And there's no problem with any of these but he gets real mad if you bring it up, especially when he's talking about how feminist he is.
