    I love how people refuse to say the word "eyes" sometimes. Also, man, but "shamrock" tho.

    I could not parse that sentence at all for like a minute, I though Shamrock must be a my little pony or something and the author had forgotten an article

    Well now I have a ready-made answer for if anyone ever catches me off guard with high pressure questions about gemstones. The answer is definitely shamrock. Yeah of course it’s not a rock. That’s why it’s a sham-rock. Haha yes but my answer is still shamrock.

    I only just realised they were talking about eye colour instead of a character called Shamrock.

    I am reading a YOI (Yuri on Ice) fic - my first actually since finishing the series, because I'm chronically behind as a coping mechanism for Things I Am Obsessed With Ending - and the main mechanism for plot tension is misunderstanding in this particular fic. As such, the author has decided that it is perfectly okay that her main characters have not spoken - literally not shared a word - in over five chapters.

    In fact, they have literally never exchanged more than five lines without getting interrupted, because apparently that's how this author thinks you keep tension through misunderstanding alive. I want to reach through the screen, grab them by the collar, and scream "THAT IS NOT THE CASE". There are so many things you can do, without hitting the same, frustrating tonal note over and over again. There are so many things that can happen, so many ways to have them interact, that keeps this particular plot mechanism alive. In fact, you can keep this particular plot mechanism (which is admittedly not one of my favorite mechanisms to begin with) alive by having these characters do literally anything but have a conversation that specifically addresses the source of their misunderstanding. It's kind of idiotproof.

    Also, a lot of the particular emotional mechanisms that feed what one of the characters is doing are completely out of character for that character (Yuuri and unending hatred that is not directed inward) in a way that is not reasonably justified by extrapolating the new circumstances...or any circumstances honestly, given the core of their character.

    So yes yes, the question is why am I still reading this? Well one, I started it because it was the most highly rated E fic in the Viktor/Yuuri pairing...and now I'm firmly in the grips of sunk cost fallacy. HALP.

    I'll have to ask YOI Badfic Friend if they've read that one, though I imagine they all start to blend together after a while. :::PPP

    No idea if YOI Badfic Friend has any recs for good fic or not, since they primarily update me on really bad YOI fic. Hence the name. But I can ask. :::PPP

    Randomly remembered the badfic which had Martin the Warrior randomly dropping "fuck" in a conversation, then remembered that Tumblr concluded he probably would swear like a sailor, and now I'm thinking we need fanfic in which the characters swear every other word but do so entirely in archaic Celtic-to-WW2 curses that mean nothing today.

    Yeah, this is a big issue with fandoms for kids' shows where you don't hear the characters cursing onscreen, but it's quite likely they probably would if the network didn't forbid it--do you go with the language they use in canon or do you...

    let Pearl/Ford/whoever say "fuck"?

    I do the latter but not everyone agrees on this issue.

    I'm remembering how Rowling acknowledged that Ron would swear a blue streak, and that she explained that she had to figure out how to show that, without actually...using the sort of language he would, because it would shift the rating for her books up considerably and she didn't want hard swears in books that were definitely going to get read by and to young kids.

    What bothered me with that specific fanfic wasn't really the fact that he said "fuck". It was the fact that it contrasted violently with the baby-swears he used a sentence earlier, and then he never said it again but it wasn't presented as a Precision F-Strike so much as just dropped in there, making it appear really out of place. No one else used strong language in the entire multi-fic set despite circumstances implying they really should.

    Yeah. You gotta look for cues in characterisation. Stan uses fake swears all the time and probably wouldn't swear unless there were no children around anywhere.

    Ford can't remember whether or not it's okay to give children weapons in his home dimension, the chance that he'd think about it before tossing an F-bomb is minimal, but since he doesn't do it during Weirdmageddon, he is probably the sort of person who swears when deeply frustrated/annoyed, rather than when major shit is going down.

    Pearl probably wouldn't say fuck except in extremis, but if she said it, she'd say it with her whole rock heart.

    Amethyst ... yeah.
