My fanfiction gripe is that AO3 is having some kind of server issue and I can't access it. >:(

Most fanfic writers' attempts at poetry or songwriting. I can stand strained rhymes, but I want to hit things when the lines don't scan.

Fic writers who rigorously tag anything sexual, but leave things like mind wiping/control and torture and nonsexual abuse off the tag list completely.

Rhyming is what sets me off personally, but then I'm not terribly fond of it as its used in English in general.

And yet I am of two minds because I dearly want to see more poetry and songwriting.

please write more poems fanfic writers

    even if they're shit

    and like improve over time

Everyone knows how annoying No Paragraph Breaks is but no one ever talks about Too Fucking Many Paragraph Breaks and its constant shadow Triple Spaced Paragraphs. I want so badly to like this fic i’m reading but it’s just

    [two sentences]
    an eternity of white void
    [two more short sentences]

    and i’m dying

I'm technically guilty of that, but that's because AO3's formatting does that when you copy-paste from Google Docs (and I have no clue how to unfuck it). That could be the case for this person too.

I could see it being annoying, though. (Seriously, if anyone has an easy fix...)

If you have a copy of Word, copy-pasting from gdocs into Word and then copy-pasting from Word into AO3 fixes that.

(I also use this as a chance to keep a hard copy on my computer and do my last-minute run through of edits, because I'm too lazy to figure out how to do em-dashes with keycodes and gdocs doesn't put them in automatically like Word does.)

Would OpenOffice or LibreOffice work? I don't own Word. :(

I'm not super sure, but it's worth a shot--I know copying from gdocs spaces things weird in word processors sometimes too, so I'd imagine that having the extra step can't hurt.

heck, if you just have notepad that also gets rid of any strange formatting issues, though its true that A03 sometimes loves to mess things up for you Anyways

According to a post I just saw, if you're working in Google docs, if you only hit enter ONCE to start a new paragraph and then adjust your settings so the 'spaces between paragraphs' part so it's 2x space (or however they put it) that should fix it.

Notepad would get rid of all formatting, though, wouldn't it?

Yes, I believe microsoft office has default settings that are more friendly in this way than google docs or libre office, but the settings in those programs can definitely be customized to make it work. If you hit enter only once, ao3 will generally process that document nicely when you copy it over.

I'm too lazy to dig up the exact menus, but in an existing document or a new one, hit ctrl+a to be sure you're catching everything, and then go to the menu to... probably format -> paragraph. There you can set your document to have single spacing within paragraphs, but to do something like double space or 1.5 spacing between paragraphs (you can enter this as spacing before a paragraph or after a paragraph).

Having universal single spacing or default indents drives me crazy, but going into the format -> paragraph settings should have a lot of options for setting your documents up to look whatever way makes it easiest for you to write, and the paragraph spacing in particular is the key thing for making ao3 play nice!

If AO3 accepts Markup formatting, that should make sure the formatting sticks. And thankfully Markdown is pretty easy to learn and use.

I don't wanna have to learn an entire thing solely for fanfiction formatting (especially since I have to go back and edit all my previous work) so I think I'ma just do the copy-paste into OpenOffice thing...

It’s not just the fact that the paragraphs are short - sometimes short paragraphs are good. It’s just when it’s like. Really fucking choppy. Either a bunch of sentences that flow naturally from one another and could have built a nice momentum but were broken apart into tiny chunks instead, or one- or two- sentence paragraphs that should go a little deeper and explore their content more, but just stop and move on, and it feels like an unfinished thought. Either way it feels like you’re constantly missing a stair.
