How do I make this?

I mean, it just kind of looks like the symbols have a clipping layer of pretty picture, which results in a pretty picture in the shape of symbol. It'd be pretty easy in SAI, probably PS too, but I haven't used PS very extensively.

Oh, these would be pretty easy to make, provided you had a photo editor with both layers and clipping groups. (Photoshop, SAI, and MangaStudio all fulfill that, but I think there are free graphics programs that do the same; you can get a pretty decent trail of MangaStudio, but I think all Adobe products are pretty well locked behind paywalls now. Which is a shame, because Elements was a good program for cheap before they shifted to the subscription format.)

From here, I'm going to use Photoshop CS5 as my example, but I have done this in SAI too.

The basic way this works is that the artist makes a base layer (in this case, the pieces symbol)

    layer1.PNG

Then they create a new layer on top of that and right click, selecting "clipping mask".

And then, with that layer clipped:
    layer2.PNG
    layer3.PNG

They can draw whatever they like on the layer and it will comform to the dimensions of the base layer.

This is also how people make those cool space gifs!

  3. Okay, I’ll see if I have a program that can do that. Thanks!

  4. What in the absolute fuck

  5. Does Krita not have a bucket tool?? the "flood/fill" (whatever) tool just makes everything shaded slightly.

  6. This is not as easy as it sounded

GIMP would probably be a better bet for editing-type stuff--it's also free!

  8. Fuck this. Gimp isn’t doing it either, I can’t find the tool you specified. New plan- find an image, crop to desired size, make new layer with second image with a white BG and the desired symbol as blank/alpha, merge down.

  10. New question- why is it so fucking rough around the edges and how do I fix it?

It looks aliased, do your tools have an anti-aliasing option?

  12. It’s gimp. Does that answer your question?

    No, I don't use it.

Personally, I would get the 31-day free trial of SAI (found here) and do it that way, using the clipping functionality. I could put up a quick SAI-specific tutorial if you'd like later on tonight.

If you sent me what you're working with I could probably make it for you?

  16. Thanks for the help. I'm not an artist and I give up.

Very sorry the art programs gave you a hard time. I enjoy trying out as many as I can and I hated krita, found it's interface really didn't work for me.

If you ever want to give it another try in future firealpaca is really simple and beginner friendly free program. And it has a tickbox for clipping right above the layers box. If you ever want something fancier medibang paint pro is also free and is firealpacas big, more polished brother.

  19. I just wanna add the symbol as a new layer and center it on the canvas without it going off the canvas.
