It's also the research load, I think, because otherwise we'd expect to see a lot of canon-divergence everyone-lives AUs, and the modern AUs far outnumber those
yeah i don't know if i'd even tag "javert lives/valjean saves javert" as an AU, since it's such a common trope in the Les Mis fandom. (same with the barricade boys, but Javert/Valjean was one of my first otps so that's what i've mostly read.) everyone lives but setting is canon is like. the oldest tradition of Les Mis fic. but i still definitely think an AU where the setting is different should be marked as such.
So hey uh phonetically-written accents are the worst thing ever oh my god. Unless you are Mark Twain, do not do that. Please. I'm begging you, authors.
If you know what you're doing, go for it! But 99% of the time something like a…Scottish accent in fic reads like "afkjlkfdj;sddsf OCH AYE" and that is not especially conducive to a pleasant reading experience. (and yes, this sometimes happens in canonical sources, too. I'm looking at you, officially-translated Alexander Anderson.)
Jägerspeak kinda involves intentionally not knowing what you´re doing. It´s abadly transcribed germanic? eastern european? accent that because canonical for jägermonsters in girl genius. I find it massively fun to write and being german, I feel i´m allowed :P
whenever the subject of phontetically written accents comes up i just remember the tf2 fandom i got used to it when reading tf2 fics but. wow
Oi spoi are ye sayin' moi accent is poorly transcribed? Doing your time in the TF2 mines is like a baptism by fire for phonetic accents.
Lemme rephrase: Unless you are a professional or at least have a good grasp on how to not make readers' eyes hurt…just, like, say the dude is Scottish or Irish or whatever. Sometimes it's okay to tell and not show. :P
Given how badly Fiddauthor writers tend to fuck up basic social norms in the 1960s, I suspect a lot of fic set in the 17th c would be terrible. I ran an RP set in the 1940s and I had to explain to one of my co-mods why my female character would not ask boys on dates.
I'm personally not too picky about historical accuracy as long as people aren't like, giving the characters automobiles or cell phones, I just want more fic that writes about the actual characters instead of pasting their names onto generic US college students, and the canon-era-set fics are better about that :(
Yeah but with Feegles you don't have to make it up yourself, and Pratchett was actually good at writing the accent!
I seem to recall one of them having someone speak in a really atrociously-written Scottish accent, yeah.
Scottish Cronus was a thing for a minute, iirc. More a thing in posts than fics, but there was something in a fic I remember. Man, I'm trying to remember WHICH fic it was and drawing a blank. It wasn't at 'och, aye' levels, but it was sometime when I was either in or had just left Ireland, and it was fairly jarring.
