Spoiler That was the winnest. I was impressed but thinking it was maybe a little unlikely? But all was explained!
Spoiler She did steal the books before that, though- there's a momentary shot at the end where you can see them lined up in a drawer in the Falcon. No wonder Yoda lightning'd the place before Luke could go in, the slimy little sneaky jerk. :::')))
I need so much meta for the latest movie I wanna see people's opinioooons. Anyone got good meta posts to share about the last jedi?
:x i liked it better than the first one, oop but I've never payed attention to romantic pairing stuff really, except Finn/Poe...bc I legit dont feel there's any romantic undertones in either movie besides Finn/Poe. Like, objectively. For me, at least. Reylo is cool but I just don't. See it? I feel like Rey looks at Kylo as like. A wounded animal she could save. (Not quite in a dehumanizing way, but it's hard to say what I mean, really.) Also fuck, I loved Luke's characterization. Of course he's an old grumpy misanthropic hermit. He's got a guilt complex a mile wide, what else can you do but fly to a deserted island and milk weird camel things all day, instead of dealing with yourself? /blatherin
I'm pretty sure like... everything people talk about going on behind-the-scenes is made up. Also apparently the fact that some scenes were cut is proof that Rian Johnson was trying to ruin the film despite... being the one... to write and film all of those scenes...
That by far is my least favorite fucking complaint because having seen some of them these scenes were not fucking necessary. Some might have had cool dialogue, but they would have bloated an already bloated film and no matter what fucks on tumblr say the general public is not going to watch a 4 hour cut of a film and be happy. You have 2 and a half hours at fucking best to work with. Even that is pushing it for many moviegoers. And length isn't the only issue here! There's ones of "Is this scene redundant?" and "Does this scene actually fucking add anything besides cool dialogue?" It can be the coolest fucking dialogue and effect in the world but if it kills pacing then it's going to kill interest. At best it'll be a shitty part in an otherwise ok film, like the Jabba scene added into ANH for some fucking reason. At worst it'll be regarded as a bloated, terrible fucking mess.
My favorite was the one claiming a scene was cut because it had Finn doing a cool thing and Johnson is racist. Yes, he is so racist that he... wrote a scene of a black lead doing a cool thing (in a movie he wrote where said black lead does a number of cool things in a number of different scenes that were not cut) just so he could cut it?
you know like the hobbit films ^That one in particular was one of the ones that would've been pointless and dragging down pacing. He does a cool thing there. That is enough. We do not need to significantly slow down the film there.
I understand there's a cut floating around the internet somewhere where somebody managed to cut that monstrosity down into one 2-hour movie, and it remained 100% coherent.
Given how late in development the decision for three films was made that doesn't surprise me one fucking bit. EDIT: For the unaware the decision to turn two movies into three was made towards the end of the first film's production. If it seems like certain bits make more sense pacing wise in the first film than where they sit in the second that's probably because They Were Meant To Be There Instead.
To be honest the pacing was my biggest gripe with TLJ. I really felt like there was a lot more that should have been cut; the film lost momentum early and never really got it back. Everything dragged too long, either by a little or by a lot. Editing is a nightmare, I know from experience. But it's super important, at least as much as writing and directing. I even like most of the individual scenes; it's just that a lot of those scenes probably should have been trimmed or cut.
Oh. I agree. I like a lot of the individual bits but I do feel it dragged too much. It honestly needed more cut. A lot more. Potentially entire fucking characters.
well, that's true. though I do wish they'd kept in the third lesson one, because for all the movie afterward I was trying to work out whether Luke had done anything that could be like... a secret final lesson. I think I thought it was something to do with his duel with Kylo at the end before the 'no there was a 3rd one and they cut it' thing happened.
The third lesson is the one scene that I feel should've been kept. While something else should've been cut. Because as is we're kind of relying on our audience to forget a bit of dialogue and just believe that things make sense. Which is fine if you're like me. But a lot of people it definitely took them out of it the first time, and during rewatches I am going to be very aware of this fact and it is going to annoy me.
yeah up until I saw the bits about the deleted scene I figured there'd just been some subtle clue in the final battle that was like. a sneaky third lesson, that had something to do with Rey's actions. Like, she learned the final lesson when she was saving the day at the end, or something. apparently not!
