Hey @Kit, I can give it a shot. If you open the image in your Google photos, can you right-click it and then click "open image in new tab"? Taking the URL from that new tab usually works. If not, we can keep trouble-shooting. :)

A question for y'all. I'm working on a Tetris heart cross-stitch pattern. @Imoyram can testify as to how rage-quit I got when browsing Pinterest ... BECAUSE NOT ALL THE PATTERNS USE FULL TETRIMINOS. this is just WRONG. so obviously I have to make my own.

I'm pretty happy with the heart pattern, but I decided to poke at spelling out the cute message with tetriminos, too. Pic attached - is it legible? Is it too much? I'm not super attached to it, I just thought it might be a nice touch... alas writing letters with tetriminos is hard. Also, there's no saying I need to make the tetriminos in the letters the same scale as the ones in the heart - they could be half-size. Which might look nicer.

@Kaylotta that was in fact the steps I took. Not sure what to try next.

As for your pattern - it's fairly readable? Scale-wise I think it might look better if the letters were half size, but then you might lose readability.

@Kit hmmmmmmm. very strange! Can you access your photos from picasaweb.google.com? I copied the URL from one of the pictures you posted and it is similar to the ones I get from Google Photos, but I use the ones from Picasa and they work okay.

Also thanks for the advice on the pattern!

I had been doing it from photos.google.com - I went back and edited the post so all the photo links came from picasaweb.google.com, from right-clicking the photos and opening them in new tabs. Any improvement?

I can read it but not super well? Also that's going to come out tiny on actual cross stitch. think of it more like pixel art.

Also, for fellow glass people - "people who don't work with glass: annealing is just a cheap trick to make weak glass stronger."

@Starcrossedsky - I'm currently planning to do the heart as one pixel in four stitches (like 2x2). Haven't decided about the text yet... Thanks for the input!

it has been more than a decade since i did any quilting, but the urge is growing stronger. but i can't ever come up with an easy project to learn/relearn a skill, oh no, i have to imagine the most complicated and ambitious project and fixate on it, even if it's totally beyond my skill level.

i'm waffling between embroidering twelve or so cute garden critters like bees and frogs and snails, and making those the centerpieces of patchwork squares, or learning english paper piecing and doing some absurdly complex geometric mosaic entirely by hand. currently, the Cute Bug Quilt is winning by a hair.

Speaking of quilting! I'm working on a wedding present for two of my oldest friends. I've been close to both halves of the couple for over a decade, and just buying them presents off the registry seemed lackluster, so I also decided 'hey, three already-busy weeks is totally a reasonable timeframe to go from zero to sixty on a quilt.' The wedding is this Saturday, so hopefully it'll all work out! I finished piecing this last week, but I've only done the piecing part, not the quilting. My sewing machine was a present from my parents, and my mom thought she was picking out a really solid choice, but it turns out my particular model doesn't come with the best type of foot for quilting. So I'm going to fight that after I finish drawing March Cronuses, and if things don't go well with my machine, I'll be changing my travel plans to travel south a day early and steal my mom's sewing machine for a night before I head off into the mountains. I'm pretty positive I can manage that. Hyperfocus is the best.

And just generally speaking, I've had good luck balancing my lack of experience and my hilarious overambition with irish chain and log cabin quilts. I still get pretty patterns, but it's all straight lines. I've had... erratic luck with triangles, and my rectangle-based quilts have pieced together much faster, which has been good for keeping focus. I've got a BEAUTIFUL set of yellow fabrics where I can hopefully wrangle a bargello quilt, but I'm champing at the bit because I don't want to follow THEIR boring pattern, I want to make my owwwwwwwwn. Even though it's bargello, which is really not boring at all. I figure I'll work through that and give it away as a present, then finally pick out a quilt to make for myself. I do have a silly Homestuck dolopsii quilt that I kept for mysel that I made for hswc two summers ago (It's basically an adapted Irish chain), and I'll have to remember to dig up some pictures of that later!

Oh no, guys. You know what's perfectly suited to jpeg artifacts? Cross-stitch. I have no self-control, it was less than thirty minutes from idea to purchasing materials. 5.5x8 inches, color depth of 20. At least I started with something simple instead of trying to do the whole stairs comic at a scale where the text would be legible. I'm trying to wrap up projects not start new ones asdggzaaaaa

So- some time ago I decided to knit a scarf for my grandmother. I had just learned to knit. Home on Christmas break and thus separated from boarding school knitfriends, I managed to put an increase at the beginning of nearly every row, ending up with a sad trapezoid where b1=30 stitches and b2=60 stitches before I GAVE UP IN FRUSTRATION and realized what had happened.

I gave it to my grandmother anyway, because I thought she would find it funny. She decided it was a perfect arm-chair arm-cover and it has been there since!

Yesterday she asked me to knit her a matching one. So I tried! I reasoned that since I'm better at decreases than increases, I should start at the sixty-stitch end, and then decrease one per row.

The new trapezoid.... is done now. It is not a trapezoid:

As a counterbalance to this, here is the scarf I just finished! It's seed stitch with intarsia diamonds! I am genuinely proud of it!

It has a garter stitch border, three color diamonds at either end, and the diamonds in the middle are Various Other Stitches. Garter stockinette ribbing stockinette garter, I think.
