Does make you wonder what happens if the love fades (do the flowers die? Is that the first thing a marriage counselor checks, the health of your love bouquet?) or the relationship turns sour, though. Like, how many people stay in unhealthy, abusive relationships because their SO ‘loves’ them still?

yeah, i really wouldn't want how my relationship is working out and all the crushes i've had that obvious on me like that. it would be just too... revealing, honestly. i want to be able to keep my shit private and if i lived in that au, i'd never be able to. people would know. i'm not squicked by soulmarks in soulmate aus the same way, even though they are kinda similar, 'cause at least you can hide a soulmark if you want to and a lot of them are up to interpretation. like, i love soulmarks in soulmate aus. they're awesome! :D:D:D but this "pure" hanahaki au is just horrifying to imagine, now i'm thinking about it. much more horrifying than the deadly version.
Yeah, like. Especially because it really comes across like a weird virginity metaphor. You ~knew love~, you are now permanently changed forever and can never go back to how you were before. Like G-rated Loveless ears. And you know there'd be creepy people who only hit on people with no flowers or with unopened flowers, and you know there'd be aro people thinking they're broken and sick, and god help you if you're in a socially taboo relationship, because if two boys with buds both have them open at the same time, now everyone in the middle school knows they're not straight.
but yeah also. It's. Pretty clear the part they actually have a problem with is the whole "friendzoning is fatal" thing, but you can solve that by just... making hanahaki nonfatal and having it go away when you get over the crush...
They could have just written something like, original flavor hanahaki wigs me out but I love the aesthetic so here’s my version I made up that I like better... Just leave out the sweeping morality generalizations and it’s perfectly fine. Still a bit of a Nope for me since I literally read that in a book once as someone’s worst nightmare and it was suitably horrifying, but I wouldn’t feel any need to argue about it.
I just like the image of people hacking up flowers. Especially if it hurts them. Gods. i hope thorns come up with those rose petals pearl
all I have to contribute to this discussion is this oneshot by Nakamura Asumiko about a guy dying of non-love-related flower-blossomitis so uh other people also think having flowers grow on you is a creepy concept, I guess is my point?

It was one of the Forbidden Game series by L.J. Smith. Proooobably the first one. I haven't read them since I was a teenager so I don't know how they hold up, but I loved them dearly.

What's really killing me about the Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe fic above is the random tense change in the middle of the sentence. Like the language wasn't mangled enough? All I can think of is Douglas Adams' time travel grammar thing like "wioll haven be".
