I've continued practicing image processing on robots. I decided that today would finally be the day I did some proper edge detection. One of the major reasons I'd started using all my TFP Soundwave screenshots in the first place (other than just because Soundwave) is that I thought edge detection might work nicely on them. It took me forever to get around to actually implementing edge detection. By then I'd nearly forgotten the original plan. Spoiler Didn't JRO try to say a thing about how oh nooooo these are those ~other~ scraplets in the oil reservoir!! Which I get, because giving away the reveal is no fun, but HAAAAAAA, THE DAY IS SAVED LITERALLY THANKS TO WHIRL'S PARENTING SKILLS!!!!! His babies are so cute and smart! And if the scraplets are working as a unit now, his baby is all grown up into a potentially full-sized mech. Also, the ammonites, or someone, didn't they have a thing mentioned about like.... collective intelligence? Or maybe I'm just generalizing from how combiners work. But Whirl's daughter deserves to be a full person of her very own!!!!! Also, goddamn, those scenes with getaway hit me right in the heart. He's an ass, but I love the kind of ass he is. And coming right out with that, 'just an MTO with ideas above his station.' GodDAMN. also crankcase trying to fill in for misfire with the quips. lov these nerds. LOV EM.
Spoiler iirc, that was also part of the holiday special-- it's mentioned as part of How Scraplets Could Be A Baby. gimme a few and I can probably dig it up edit: combination of Silent Light and, actually, LL 11. Silent Light (Velocity, explaining to Whirl): "They're tiny, all right-- except when they combine to see off a threat. And in their combined form-- one body, one spark--" LL 11 (Getaway, Villain Monologing at Riptide): "They [the red scraplets] were ravenous. Ravenous and semi-domesticated-- which meant we could barter." A combined scraplet swarm is, essentially, one mech, and can theoretically be as smart as a natural Cybertronian. Whatever the hell "semi-domesticated" means, anyway.
Spoiler I think it was actually part of the annual! If I'm remembering right, which I definitely might not be. Ultra Magnus had an infestation of scraplets that they shrunk down to deal with. And then I think when people asked JRO if the reservoir scraplets were Whirl's baby, he said that nope, it's these other scraplets that showed up in the story before.
