I think the only potential deadly use for a whip would be strangulation, and I’m not even sure if they’d work well for that. (Might depend on the whip being used, even.)

Depends on the type of whip, I think. A metal-tipped one could leave actual cuts, and then death by blood loss is a possibility if they kept it up enough.

yeah, the only deaths i've read about from whipping/flogging have been a result of infected cuts, not from the whipping itself. i've read accounts in ship's logs of sailors who got punished by flogging, lay facedown in a hammock for three days with a fever, and then either were fine or died. (yes, i have read 18th-century ship's logs for fun.) there are some pretty nasty barbed whips that could possibly cut deep enough for real blood loss, but even then you'd need to whip the person a lot, or get real lucky and sever an artery. and there are also those chain whips, and the urumi/whip sword, that could definitely fuck a person up if wielded by someone who knows what they're doing, but afaik those were never an actual practical weapon and were more for display/martial arts training purposes.

I’ve been reading a book about imperial Russia that mentions some times it was used as an execution method, but that was 100+ lashes. Not really effective in a combat situation

Related to the Urumi, The whip-sword commonly seen in fiction is... also kind of a nightmare to make it work. Edge alignment with something like that is hard, it's not very good at defending, etc. The fundamental problem with a flexible weapon is that it bends on impact, instead of cutting through.

There's flails and the Kusari-Gama, but that's more of a weight on a chain than a 'whip'. You hit with the hard part.

Basically to make a whip or general flexible blade an effective combat weapon, you really need something extra, of the magic/high tech sort.

Or you can do it sailor venus style, where the whip's motion is more directed by the user than actively, uh, whipped. She gestures and it goes where she points/does what she wants, basically. And then it's like a solid flexible laser, which can also be used to grapple or grab onto things.

I mean, yeah, that works, but I *did* say magic would do it.

Lord preserve my sanity there's Eridan "meta" on Ao3 only this time in defense of him... that starts out accusing people of not reading the source material then goes on to slam Feferi for "pushing the responsibility of feeding her lusus onto Eridan so she can fuck of and do whatever she wants." This in spite of the fact that their first introduction page is both of them working together to feed Glubby, and there is no canon evidence of whether or not Feferi asked for Eridan's help or he volunteered it.

there's this fic i'm reading that's been following along with the Eight Precepts storyline, and it just wrapped it up and moved on to the silly little hero daycare thing with the provisional licence flunkies group, and i'm real annoyed at how it interprets Bakugou's whole "sometimes you gotta use violence to teach kids their place! that's how i was raised!" thing. Because, like. Bakugou's mom does literally hit him when he mouths off. It's not conjecture or implied or anything. It's played for laughs, kinda, but it is literally how the only interaction we've seen between him and his mom goes, and this fic is all. "oh nooo, he doesn't really genuinely believe that on any level!! and whether he does or not, he certainly doesn't believe that because of how he was raised!! he and his mom have a great relationship, based on mutual respect and shit!!!"

I don't get how so many people treat that relationship like it can't possibly be harmful in any way. We have no reason to believe that his mom hitting and insulting him in front of people he respects is anything new. Hell, given how papa Bakugou reacts, we have a pretty good case for it being business as usual. A lot of folks seem to think it's understood by both parties to be meaningless shittalk, but, like. She called him weak for getting kidnapped and basically laid the blame for how the whole Kamino ward thing turned out on him, in front of a dude who Bakugou's admired his whole life and who got grievously injured while saving Bakugou's bacon. And then he has a weird fighty breakdown with Deku a month later about how guilty he is over how things turned out and how he feels weak and shit, and I don't get why more people aren't connecting point a to point b here? at the very least, she's absolutely not helping matters.

Unrelated: The constant mischaracterization of Hermione and Ginny in this fic. And the overall... smugness? I guess? Like, they took this really interesting concept (magic and science can work together! magical space travel, with none of the hard work glossed over! magical space exists in more dimensions than muggle space, which is why muggles can't really coexist with them; being in places like hogwarts and diagon alley are terrifying and nauseating if you can't properly perceive them!) and then... ruined it.

Why do so many fics insist on blaming Hermione for Harry and Ron's slacking off in school?!

Tfw a fic author's only concept of bdsm is a really unhealthy dynamic featuring a bizarre lack of respect on both sides and zero communication or negotiation. Also, spit as lube.

idk about anyone else but I get super taken out of fics whenever tumblr-popular words like 'valid' and depending on the context 'soft' are used in fanfic. and generally I get annoyed when I see tumblr-esque stuff on like ao3 in general, like talking in the tags or that particular tone of voice used in summaries or w/e. I'm just here for my content please don't remind me of that godforsaken website

Declaring that girls should be more mature, more sensible, more pragmatic and able to handle more hardship than boys of the same age is still goddamn sexism.

valenstyne Went out for cigarettes, never came back

Now, I am 100% in favor of experimental writing and making deliberate stylistic choices that defy the established rules and conventions of prose, but—
When almost your entire multi-chapter fic—
Is written in single-line, single-sentence, sometimes single-word paragraphs—
    Mostly ending in hyphens—
It quickly moves out of the realm of "mood and rhythm expressed grammatically"—
    Into—
    Really—
    Fucking—
    ANNOYING.
(And it's kind of weird, because this author's older stuff is not written this way, but apparently at some point her style changed dramatically and now everything is hyphens and sentence fragments and paragraph breaks for thousands and thousands of words. This wasn't just one fic; I read a bunch of her stuff because her characterization and dialogue and writing overall is great, but it was all like this after a certain point and just, like, Jesus.)
