Spoiler Yeah, there's old and then there's WD. I mean, I've always gronked on some level that Gems ARE gems and taking about age for them is very much talking about geology and carbon-dating mineralization layers...but. Hell. I really would not be surprised to learn that White is older than Earth as a planet. Maybe as old as some fucking solar systems, yo. We are definitely looking at cosmic-sized age ranges here ://////
Spoiler: Interesting tidbit On another forum people pointed out that the diamonds designs kinda go back in time as well- Pink is inspired by utena, Yellow is jojo, and Blue is inspired by Leiji Masumuto. Utena was a 90s anime, Jojo started in the late 80s, and Masumuto's most famous works were from the 70s. White Diamond's design seems far older- Osamu Tezuka is perhaps the closest anime/manga equivalent, but it's not a perfect comparison. The Golden Age of Animation is perhaps a little closer- especially if you extend that to thinks like comics and disney shorts- or the Brinkley Girls, but honestly my fave comparison I've seen made is this- the false Maria from Metropolis, a robot made to replace a revolutionary speaker for the lower classes and instead instigate men to violence, leading them to destroy their own homes and families. Relatedly, I really like the theory that White Diamond is some kind of fake. She's stuck in the same t pose that her pearl was in, after all
Spoiler I like the theory that White Diamond is literally holding the planet together. White Diamonds mural has her holding homeworld, White Pearl looks like she's holding something, White Diamond has her arms outstretched like she's holding the two shattered halves of the planet.
Spoiler The climax of Steven Universe is Steven storming in there to give White Diamond a what-for and at some point in this he finally gets mad for once in his life and takes a swing Her gem falls off and reveals a TV Monitor and speakers with a very embarrassed Greg Universe on it "...hey shtooball"
Spoiler: In which Greg is now Martin Mertins "Dad, how'd you even get in there!?" "You remember that Hourglass thingy? Well, after your mom kinda...you know...I thought 'gee, why don't I just go back and see her earlier, and, well, one thing led to another..." "This started an intergalactic war, dad! Thousands died or were corrupted! Maybe more!" "Yeah but---Look, Steven, have you seen these Diamond ladies? You ask me, that blue one's really into me. Got something going here." "Dad---" "Oh, and I didn't forget you either! You know, if things don't work out with Connie, I was thinking you and that, uh, the blue girl---the smaller one, I mean, flowing dress---" "Dad no!" "Listen, Shtoo, I know there's a few thousand years difference there but what's an eon between pals, y'know?"
Spoiler We need to make Blue Diamond happy-crying and holding Steven into a meme. Examples: Blue Diamond: Me Steven: My friends Blue Diamond: SU fans Steven: New episodes Blue Diamond: My depressed ass Steven: An entire pint of ice cream
that's not the episode i'd have expected to be nominated for an emmy (i liked it but i would've chose a different ep) but yay! :D:D:D
I was hoping against all hope that A Single Pale Rose would get nominated but I suspect it aired after the cutoff date. I still would’ve nominated a different episode personally, though—I was REALLY expecting Off Colors to get the nomination. STILL LET’S HOPE IT WINS
yeah, a single pale rose was the one that came to mind first to me too. and off colours was awesome too! :D:D:D and yeah, i definitely hope it wins! :D:D:D
Hmm, thinking about it...I think if I got to pick the episode submitted, I would've picked Pool Hopping, assuming it wasn't released after the cutoff date. A big part of that is that my biggest concern about Jungle Moon being the nominee is that it requires quite a bit of very direct context, which...I mean, Pool Hopping requires context too, but I'd argue that since the salient points of past events are actively discussed it's probably a bit more accessible? And it's also just really good.
It somehow didn't occur to me until rewatching with roommates that had never seen the show before that Bismuth didn't know about Pink Diamond being shattered. Now I really want to read a fic where she doesn't have the talk with Steven that first night, or doesn't decide to show him the Breaking Point right away. Have her be out and about for the fight with Jasper (or the aftermath) where Pink gets brought up, have her find out that the corruption is both a thing and the response to the rebellion shattering someone important... get her reflecting on if she was really right after all even before Steven knows enough to talk her down properly.
Spoiler it bugs me inordinately when people say white pearl's gem was removed from her eye and put in her stomach as if gems aren't hard light projections. it's possible she was reprogrammed, but i think it's more likely she was corrupted.
Spoiler ive seen theories that each diamond has different gem healing powers. yellow- form stability blue- memory pink- emotional stability white- permanence so goddess giveth and goddess taketh away. idk where I’m going with this anymore but yeah
Spoiler Pearls are incredibly sensitive to environmental conditions as well as corrosive agents.... Have y’all ever seen a pearl that’s been stored incorrectly for a while? (From here.) And from here, I believe this is a badly damaged bead nucleated pearl, where the nacre has fractured badly enough to chip off of the bead. Thinking about nucleation makes me wonder, where the fuck are they actually getting these pearls? Pearls don’t come from the ground. They come from animals. Does Homeworld have a mussel farm or something somewhere? They don’t seem particularly keen on waiting for gems to develop naturally, especially if it means they’re less likely to be perfectly regular. It seems to me like a gem that comes from a living creature in an ecosystem might be both a novelty and an aberration? Usually the ecosystem seems to be an annoying planetary feature that gets in the way of all the minerals and shit. If Pearls come from animals and that’s as weird to Gems as it sounds, maybe that’s why they’re treated both as lesser beings and status symbols?
