Well, Dave and Keith both wear red and use swords and obviously these are deep characteristics and not really superficial similarities. Karkat and Lance both talk a lot? I guess?
without naming names, I get really annoyed when people overlook bad writing decisions just because those decisions affected a character they personally disliked. like it doesn't matter that this character's death completely goes against the themes of the story, it was a character who everyone hated for screwing with the fan favorites so his death is completely justified regardless of poorly it reflects on the narrative and characters! ugh. (this isn't counting situations where characters are 'bad' because they're written poorly, that's an adjacent but different problem)
tfw when people make posts that say misleading things about how much representation there is in a canon (someone said that literally all the characters in red vs. blue are canonically queer, and that's very inaccurate) (rvb has queer characters but if you come into it expecting the entire cast to be canonically queer, you will be disappointed)
I hate that. The fastest way to make me unimpressed with your Fave Piece Of Media is lying about how much actual representation there is in it. Like, yeah, I've got a massive number of headcanons with textual support too, that doesn't mean that the devs are actually writing these characters as gay, and saying that they are is... a really good way to set up new fans for failure.
i do consider it fair to recommend something with maybe-bad-but-existing representation if you're accurately representing the representation it does have in your recommendation, though. some people don't like that but the way i think, as long as the queer characters you say exist in the canon do actually exist in the canon, in the quantities you say they exist in it and with the identities you say they have, i'm not bothered by the representation being maybe bad. 'cause what matters the most to me, when it comes to evaluating recommendations of canons, is whether the canons contain everything the recommendations say they have. basically, as long as no one is telling an outright lie in their recs, i'm chill.
Related peeve of the day: Tumblr conflates fan interpretation with canon so, so much I can't believe what I see said anymore without independant research. Widowmauk was not actually in the show guys that's something you made up but thanks for getting my hopes up while trying to catch up episodes
tumblr is very unreliable when it comes to describing canons accurately. like, some of it is correct but also, thanks to tumblr, both "klance is canon" and "klance is being queerbaited" have crept onto youtube and both of those interpretations are very wrong - but if your only exposure to voltron is tumblr and fandom youtube videos, you might end up thinking that klance was canon or queerbaited. and sherlock also had/has that with johnlock. and i've seen posts circulating with out of context fairly oddparents screenshots, saying that fop was progressive and ahead of its time. and like, fop is not absolutely terrible but it's not as progressive and ahead of its time as those posts make it look. red vs. blue has people claiming it has more queer people than it actually does, people claiming that the freelancers have a parental role towards the reds and blues, and some people who declare their facecanons are actually canon, among other misleading things. and based on tumblr, i reckon people would think that sister (kaikaina grif) has a bigger role and more characterization in rvb canon than she does 'cause she has a lot of fans and the fans emphasize that she is one of the reds and blues. and there's a canon female character the fans named volleyball, who barely appears at all in canon and doesn't have a name in canon either, and who sometimes appears on tumblr - and whose existence confused me a lot 'cause i didn't even remember that she was in the show 'cause of how briefly she appeared. and megan wu, siris' (mason wu) wife, never appears on screen but is mentioned by name a few times in s14, and she has a big enough presence in the fandom that people unfamiliar with the fandom might assume she appeared on screen. undertale's probs a clusterfuck for anyone unfamiliar with it, simply 'cause of all the sans aus. undertale doesn't have that many sanses in canon, and none of the common undertale aus are canon but they might look like they're canon if you're just looking on tumblr. and reverse falls is popular enough and cohesive enough in the gravity falls fandom for it to be possible for someone to mistake it for canon, i think. and tbh, i don't even know what would be incorrect about the canons i haven't actually consumed but i'm sure i've osmosised plenty of incorrect things about them from my dash and youtube and discord and stuff.
other misleading fandom things: for a while, i thought zeemuug's name was zeemoog and he had actually appeared in camp camp. but then the source of that impression eventually corrected me on the latter and google corrected me on the former. like, apparently, someone just said his name or something, and the person i learned about him from made a character out of that.
yes! i think i thought he did show up at first, before i got into undertale. like, i think i figured out that he didn't before i played but yeah... also, directium's posts about camp camp make it seem more safe and cute and sweet and pure than it is. but the show's pretty dark, judging by the ep i just started watching.
I'd say that Sherlock actually did have some queerbaiting, especially between Sherlock and Moriarty. Like, they basically characterized Moriarty as a "crazy gay man" and then capitalized on that large fanbase while publicly mocking, both in appearances and in the show itself, the people who loved the show they were making. Like even if it isn't queerbaiting its a shitty way to treat your fanbase
in sherlock, though, there is some additional context of the fanbase's behaviour. like, there was this whole Johnlock Conspiracy and the fans pushing the idea that johnlock would be canon even after the showrunners said it wouldn't be and even postulating that there would be a secret episode in which johnlock would become canon. i read a lot about it, and i've watched sherlock, used to semi-believe in the queerbaiting and the conspiracy myself, and the queerbaiting the fandom says was there has been really overblown.
Dear Berserk fans: How can you read through the Conviction Arc in its entirety and still come away with the idea that Berserk is nothing but grimdark nihilism telling us how pointless it is to even try? It ends with Farnese gaining a new purpose in life, Luca surviving something she by all rights fucking shouldn't have, a life being saved, and our heroes staring into the rising sun with a burgeoning strength and hope. Yes, what they face is still seemingly insurmountable. Yes, we only just barely made it through the night. No, this is not going to make the rest of the road easy and it isn't going to guarantee a god damn thing. But it's hopeful. It's the sort of hope born from surviving the absolute worst of circumstances. It's some Tolkien-esque levels of hope in the seemingly hopeless. They might not have beaten Griffith and the world may still be fucked, but they survived godfuckingdammit. They survived and with purpose and drive. To think that Berserk is nothing but cynical nihilism where nothing ever good happens is about as big a failure to understand the work as saying that Puck isn't a necessary part of it is.
but i mean if that's what you took away from the anime adaptation i don't fucking blame you because i mean have you seen berserk 2016 and 2017
a pornbot just posted on the red vs. blue tag why it wasn't even proper porn, just two rl women kissing in bikinis posted by what was clearly a pornbot account and their bikinis were red and blue
pornbots get into the weirdest things there are a surprising number of car blogs that just....... also happen to have a bunch of scantily-clad rl women thrown in, either directly posted with suspicious links or reblogged from more obvious pornbots muscle cars are definitely a fandom don't look at me
the venn diagram of people who scream at you for putting "lesbian" characters in het ships and people who make "she's a lesbian, her canon crush is compulsory heterosexuality" headcanons is a circle
[any random female character] "wow I stan a lesbian icon eyes emoji btw yeah her canon relationship is comp het eyes emoji because I said so eyes emoji just so you know eyes emoji she's a lesbian now eyes emoji she and [any other random female character] are totally dating eyes emoji" now I realized why these takes always make me feel exhausted and that's because they're designed to make you feel exhausted unless you're obnoxious in a similar way. "YOUR WAIFU IS A LESBIAN!! TRIGGERED YET, GREASY GAMER STRAIGHTIES? OMG CISHET TEARS" we get it, kathy, you are extremely rebellious and brave. isn't it past your bedtime
anyway an artist I really looked up to changed their twit description to this so it's real smash that mf unfollow button hours I feel like an absolute piece of shit queer for just thinking ":^/ you look like a fucking unbearable idiot my dude" so that's great thank you for listening
