Know a good podcast? List it here! I'm always asking for podcast recs, but I can never remember what people tell me when I need a a podcast to get through the eternal "I don't want to do it" blues.

I'll start with the only one I've listened to extensively

    Welcome to Night vale
A fiction based podcast about a tiny desert town beset by lovecraftian horror. The main character speaks in a hypnotic, slow way that is good for trancing or sleeping....not great for chores or activities.

Within the Wires just started its 3rd season! Season one is a series of relaxation tapes made for someone at an institute. Season two is a series of audio guides for art museums. In both, the actual story is revealed slowly, in bits and pieces obfuscated by all the other stuff, and it is, imo, super cool. (both narrators also have really calming voices so I relisten to old episodes to fall asleep)

Over the summer I binged The Magnus Archives, which is a horror podcast - Jonathan Sims has just been made Head Archivist of The Magnus Institute, dedicated to investigating and recording paranormal experiences, and the archives are a MESS. Some of the statements prove a bit difficult to record through more modern technological means, so he sits down with a tape recorder, and begins.
The statements themselves are kinda like nosleep stories - some good, some meh - but there's also an overarching story slowly gaining more and more focus. It's REALLY good! Most the episodes have been transcribed and published as Google docs by the runners but there's a big gap of episodes from like #41-68 or something... Would definitely recommend it regardless.
(also the fandom writes some FANTASTIC smut with varying flavours of mindfuck and dead dove. good fandom.)

the adventure zone is really, really good. hilarious, excellent storytelling particularly in the later bits of balance arc...it’s what i listen to when i need something to make me laugh my ass off while also keeping me invested in the plot. i’ve only listened to the first arc so far but, oh man, it’s great.

blurry photos! it’s a very, very silly, very fun podcast that discusses cryptids, aliens, the really out there conspiracies, and ~*~mysterious happenings.~*~ the tone has changed a little since one of the hosts left, but i still fucking adore it. they did one skit that involved a cultist walking the listener through a demon summoning in the style of bob ross, and it was so funny i had to go play it for my whole family.

the myths and legends podcast is really nice, too. i used to use it to fall asleep to, but i’d get so invested in the story i’d just stay awake. i love hearing about fairy tales, and versions of fairy tales i’ve never heard before. the narrator has a fantastic voice and this wonderful dry humor that leaks into the stories sometimes, it’s just. all around very nice.

i listen to a...Fuckload of true crime podcasts, so i’ll type something on those later x3

My Favorite Murder helps get me through rough times. Casual and rambly true crime podcast where two Californian former goths talk about a murder each for the week. I'm also really fond of the Super Best Friend Cast, though the latter is best paired with also watching their lps. Basically these assholes just ramble about gaming news, questions, and so on so like an hour and a half. So it's like one of their lps but without the gameplay.

Also Within the Wires I have to also recommend pretty heavily. It has one of the most distinct narrator voices I've heard in a while, to the point where I was able to hear her voice in my head well enough to write short bits of prose in said voice. It does get very hard to listen to at times though and triggered a panic attack in me.

  7. Nobody's Home

Nobody's Home I'm a Greg Coded Tom Girl

I'm seconding Wolf 359, it's a fun story drama podcast about a few folks orbiting a star out in space, pretty isolated from contact planetside, experiencing some strange occurrences happening to them on their ship.

Also the other nightvale presents podcasts are good

I only listen to the mountain goats, while delves into the songs of that band (background of those songs, the technical aspects of the music), they also talk a lot about being a fan of media, and what it means to be a creator of something. It's pretty insightful

Also seconding within the wires as well, it's one of my favs

Sawbones is a fun history comedy podcast about the mishaps of medical history, they dedicate eps to one topic (the hosts are a comedy husband and doctor wife team)

HISTORY HONEYS AND SEX ARCHIE ARE GREAT. History Honeys is a couple talking about their favorite historical shit! Sex Archie is...a couple talking about Riverdale. Both are done by General Ironicus and his wife. So if you like Chip and Ironicus and/or Gextra Life I'd check those out.

    artistformerlyknownasdave revenge of ricky schrödinger

seconding my favorite murder and sawbones!

other true crime recs (although sawbones at least isn't true crime)

last podcast on the left: very similar tone to MFM, although it tends to go a little more indepth? very casual and rambly as well, though. this one has a lot of extremely nsfw humor, though, so if that kind of thing isn't your style, particularly in reference to awful crimes, it might not be for you. it's really fun and informational though, and they also do things like aliens and conspiracies and whatnot. they've also recently started doing something called side stories with two of the hosts (although the third occasionally makes an appearance) that covers current events and weird shit and suchlike.

true crime garage: another casual and rambly one, although with less of a comedic bent than MFM or LPOTL. every episode has a beer rec if that's your thing. it's very much just...two dudes, in a garage, talkin' about true crime. they tend to get pretty in depth too, and one of the hosts composes all the music for the show and he's put out some fucking bangers. it adds a lot of atmosphere and i have spent many a road trip listening to true crime garage. imo it really is the perfect road trip podcast. i think they exclusively do unsolved ones? or, mostly unsolved, at any rate.

casefile true crime: i haven't listened to this one as much recently, but i really like it. his episodes on golden state killer and silk road in particular. just one dude this time, so it's definitely less rambly, although it doesn't feel scripted? it's really nice though. he's got a really excellent voice for story telling and i like to put this on while i'm drawing. he's also australian, so he covers australian crimes a little more indepth than the other podcasts might, which is nice.

disgraceland: the tone of this one is VERY different from the other ones i've recced, but i think it works. it feels scripted but not stilted, it's nice but it's very much not just some dude telling you a story. the theme of this podcast is celebrities who've gotten away with or were victims of crimes, because of their celebrity. the storytelling tends a little towards the dramatic, but i think it works with the subject matter. shorter episodes than the rest, too--30 to 40 minute bite sized chunks. very easy to listen to. i like it a lot!

I am really loving Reply All right now. The focus is on various internet-related things. Sometimes it'll be a more serious almost radio-like discussion of an internet trend or a fad or a person or something; sometimes it's Super Tech Support, where one or more of the hosts tries to help out someone with a problem that is (marginally or tangentially) related to the internet somehow; sometimes it's Yes Yes No, which is my personal favorite, and where the two main hosts bring in their boss and explain a tweet to him. It's been really enjoyable and there's a lot of variety. The episodes are also pretty short, which may be a pro or a con depending.

I do not believe I've met a McElroy podcast I didn't like, but MBMBAM and Rose Buddies are my current favorites. Rose Buddies may be a bit of an acquired taste but I really love it for its soothing properties (well, before the Bachelor/ette franchise really broke kind of bad). It's Rachel and a more subdued Griffin telling a story about something that does not matter to me in the slightest, and I love that and miss it.

hyrax we'll ride 'till the planets collide

seconding the rec for Myths and Legends, and nth-ing the recs for the various McElCasts. (my favorite is Sawbones, and i am LOVING the current arc in TAZ.)

You Must Remember This is a podcast about the history of early hollywood that i find really interesting. they had a long series on the anti-communist blacklist that was FASCINATING, as well as a series about Charles Manson's relationship with hollywood. (the Manson stuff i particularly liked for its focus on the victims and survivors and how the Manson cult impacted their lives.)

Hardcore History has very long and very in-depth episodes about a variety of historical topics, including an epic 6-part 18-hour series on World War 1. it seems daunting, but the host is a former journalist who recounts events like he's telling a story, drawing the focus to the experiences of people in those events, which for me makes it really really engaging. a great way to really feel the human connection to past events that can look dry and boring on paper and an absolute MUST for any history buff or anyone who thinks history is interesting but has a hard time with the way it's usually taught or written about.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour (sadly ended, but there are a couple years of back episodes) was, in their words, "a new-time podcast in the style of old-time radio." it's basically a bunch of different scripted comedy series, recorded live in front of an audience by mostly voice actors, and is equal parts mockery/deconstruction of and love letter to old timey radio dramas. the different series are all a pastiche of a genre: Captain Laserbeam is a golden age superhero story, Amelia Earheart Fearless Flier is a very Captain America-ish time travel nazi-punching war drama, and my personal favorite Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars, is a space western. (there are a bunch more, as well, if none of those genres are your thing-- there are a few of the series that just don't interest me, so i skip those.) come for the jokes and novelty, stay for the surprisingly robust worldbuilding and genuine feels!

There's also Beyond Belief, about a married couple who are ghostbusting mediums, except their primary motivation in busting ghosts is usually to get people to leave them alone so they can go back to getting drunk(er). They're so in love that one time when a succubus tried to feed off their love, it exploded.

^Beyond Belief is actually tied with Sparks Nevada for my fave show on Thrilling Adventure Hour. Frank and Sadie are THE BEST, i love that they're equally likely to befriend and chat with ghosts as bust them. and the fact that they're such a loving supportive couple, with none of the "lol married people hate each other" sitcom tropes, is why it's largely what i was referring to when i mentioned genuine feels. (it just doesn't have as neat a descriptor as "space western" or "golden-age superheroes" so i didn't include it in the list.)
