I’m MC Reader and I’m kinda pissed I fell in love and I got straight up dissed This dude clearly wants to act like we weren’t fated to be Like nothing ignites with impassioned flame Like he barely knows my name Yeah this motherfucker acts like he forgot about me
I mean, I've always assumed that's so people can use a word replacer browser extension and substitute their own name
You know, it makes complete and total sense that the 'MC' and 'Y/N' phenomenon is set up for people to word-replace, but I never actually considered that before now.
...Huh. Mind blown. I suddenly wish reader insert fics were my thing because I would be so damn excited right now.
It is very important to share that a brief misparse of "Y/N" as "yes/no" resulted in a conversation with YOI Badfic Friend about how someone should totally write Perfectly Generic Self-Insert Smut that's a cross between Mad Libs, Choose Your Own Adventure, and GLaDoS going "You must be the pride of [subject hometown here]."
"hey lemme just insult potential readers for a sec" (Am i understanding correctly that its an insult here)
It kills me when this one author writes a character I love who talks very fast and goes very fast all the time and decides to convey this fast nature by having the character talk in long run-on sentences ones that would usually involve lots of commas except to show that it's fast they drop all punctuation!
Representing speedster-talk by dropping all spacing and capitalization is truly the bane of DCU fandom. Speaking of, I recently scrolled past a fic that was about all the Batkids dating the author's Kennedy OCs. Like, the Jackie-O-Chappaquidick-you-sir-are-no-Jack-Kennedy Kennedys, but not the actual people. Made-up Kennedys. I did not read the fic, but I can't stop thinking about the concept of Kennedy OCs and I'm sort of starting to love it. You do you, internet person who just really loves Batman and also American political dynasties and decided to smash them together. Follow your arrow or whatever, even though it seems to be pointing you to some weird places.
Wow here's my latest gripe, when the author's note has a link to some fanart or a contextual conversation or extra fic information. But the link is to a blank Tumblr page because they changed URLs, and they put their new Tumblr name in the title so you have to retype the whole link. But the new Tumblr is also erased because they didn't like that name either, and you go through a series of six blog titles until the last one in the chain is deleted altogether. I have a problem with broken fanart links on AO3 in general but only Tumblr specifically pulls this blog-jumping nonsense.
ok this is extreeeeeeemely specific but fucking. Aus that treat serial killers like they're drug dealers. Or like most serial killer aus which is unfortunate because I fucking love dark takes on characters but serial killer aus are like either. Treating serial killers like any other kinda criminal or just pointlessly edgy. Like this fucking fic is talking about a serial killer who is, quote, "curious about this upstart in his territory" oh my god. Also why would you want a serial killer au without major character death. If you're going to town you may as well go in a Lincoln.
I don’t often follow links. Fanart is fun but not so fun I feel like dealing with tumblr. Especially since the lack of a "click to agree that you might see adult material" button has now made all kinds of things inaccessible to me. (Though not that one remarkably explicit robot/planet fic for some reason.) It’s just too frustrating. What really bothers me are fics with embedded images that used to be hosted on photobucket. I don’t know if they completely delete things after a while, or still do that thing where they’ll only serve the image so many times a month unless you pay, or if they even do remote image hosting at all anymore. I’m just tired of seeing large ads for photobucket about how photobucket isn’t working. (An interesting marketing decision.) Regular broken images would still be disappointing but far less unsightly and confusing. Bonus mobile gripe: wide embedded images. Messes up the page width. Mildly annoying when scrolling. This isn’t the fault of people embedding images, it’s just like, the one mobile compatibility feature that AO3 doesn’t have.
They stopped doing remote image hosting unless you pay them for it. Broke both my old LPs completely.
I suspect it's "people who don't have their own hosting and are desperate enough to keep their old stuff that relies on Photobucket links online to pay money to keep it up." And as far as I know there's still no other free image hosting site that doesn't scramble filenames in the links, so if you had a lot of pictures hosted and you wanted them in order (see: said LPs), swapping to a different one would be such a time sink as to not really be a viable option.
