Spoiler: context and one of my favorite Chicago rants again

Original quote was my mom. She was talking about how people react when you say you’re from Chicago. Used to be “Oh yeah, Al Capone! [And here she mimed the use of a machine gun in a beautiful tribute to the miming achievements of other people who have also never fired a machine gun.]” And then when Michael Jordan became a household name while the Bulls just wouldn’t stop rocking the court, people stopped doing that. Instead they’d go, “Oh yeah, Michael Jordan!” and they might even be wearing Bulls merchandise they could point at.

It’s just that her summary ended up sounding like the a very... singular take on the history of Chicago in general.

These days people often go, “Oh yeah, the Bean!” and that’s great. It’s a truly remarkable, and remarkably successful, piece of public art. It’s an absolutely stellar tourist attraction because it’s too big to require that people stand in any sort of line or wait to approach it, it’s instantly recognizable, it looks great in pictures including fucking selfies, it goes great with every type of weather which is useful since we have so much of that, and since it’s a sort of a giant noncreepy funhouse mirror placed carefully in relation to the skyline, it highlights the entire lakefront while making it look awesome. You can reach up and touch the city, but because of the size and curvature of the Bean, it doesn’t look small or cramped. I’d heard Anish Kapoor wasn’t thrilled about how we had immediately renamed his sculpture from Cloud Gate to the Bean, but quotes seem to indicate that he’s actually okay with it, which I’m happy to hear. We love that damn sculpture. We show our fondness through silly nicknames. It is our way.
