This is a thread is intended to facilitate discussion on our approach to threads ending after 1000 pages and being locked down.

Please remember the golden rule when posting here.

The issue as I understand it:

Snitchanon fucked up by not only making a thread early, but by using their mod powers to lock the old thread early, thus denying anyone the chance of making a new thread after page 1000 as per previous established tradition.

Separately, but related, is the whole... threatening suicide to get to make the next thread... thing

    that's a pretty good summary.

The "rule" is actually in place because the thread pagenumbers look weird after 1000 pages.
That's it. That's the reason. It's not like some old forums where stuff would 'error out' after too many pages.

And I locked the old thread this morning, not when I made the new thread.

That's fine - I will readily admit that my Cunning Thread Plan didn't really work out all that well.

Thanks for the information, I hadn't known that before.

To restate the issue a bit more in depth than @Vez 's post:
Snitch locked the previous tumblr.txt thread at page #999 as an attempt to stop arguments and fights from breaking out, but this was taken by several forum members as a mod abusing their powers to win a perceived competition unfairly, which caused emotions to run a bit high. In the new thread that @Snitchanon made @camelcaseCognomen was posting for @palindromordnilap , and the tone of the posts read as being somewhat manipulative, though that doesn't appear to have been the intention behind them. That spiraled a bit from there, with multiple people arguing for and against the threads legitimacy, again mostly due to the perceived competition that comes with a new long form thread.

It's getting a bit late here, I'm gonna take a break for a bit, I may or may not come back tonight.

to the mods, please feel free to edit the op post with additional information if you feel that it would be useful knowledge for this discussion.

The numbers do look really bad after they exceed 3 digits. They don’t fit in the boxes and shit.

I made the fourth Tumblr thread first. I only locked the thread more than seven hours later, after I'd got up this morning.

I think we had other threads made on page 999 before. That one was obviously heading towards a rehashed discussion we had already had in about thirty four thread derails before, and I'm honestly not seeing the issue here. The thread wasn't locked until hours after the new thread was made, I saw it.

The SPR threads always seem to lock at 999 pages, we've had that one just recently, opening a 3rd FtB SPR while the old one was on 999.

For what it's worth, I had zero problem with Snitch starting the new thread, and I have no patience for arbitrary 'races' like getting to be the OP of a new thread is a trophy or sought-after prize, any more than I like the (blessedly absent on Kintsugi afaik) thing where people will race to post 'first!!!!!!!!!!!' in any new thread devoid of context. I understand it went badly, but if people did 'race' for the new thread and we ended up with duplicates, the person who posted the 'loser' one would be distressed too, so I cannot fault Snitch for trying to bypass that.

races are just a thing that'll result in upset and resentment for anyone pinning hope on winning them imo, and having a designated fresh thread reduces work required to clean up the extra ones and hurt feelings

Forum history as I understand it: first thread to reach 1000 pages is the original Complaints Department thread. OP of that thread decided they didn't like the kerning for four digit page numbers (i don't either) so they made a new thread as a continuation. In all other threads that regularly reach a page count of thousands that aren't the tumblr thread, the OP of the original thread makes the new one at their discretion (I know both the all ages spr and the 18+ spr often have new threads ready to go several pages before 999 in case OP is offline when the magic number is hit). As far as I know, tumblr.txt is the only one where OP of a continuing massive thread changes. So any policy about forum tradition/rules regarding thousand page threads... is already accounted for and tumblr.txt is actually the rulebreaker. I'm not in every thread here, obviously, so I may be wrong, but that's what I've seen.

Edit: CDCF 2 was started by a mod in response to user unhappiness with squished numbers, I misremembered. I don't know if OP asked or not and I don't want to comb through a hundred posts to find out, tbh, but it does mean that Mod Continuing New Huge Thread has precedent.

sirsparklepants is right as to the history. there is exactly no reason for any specific length of thread breaking other than "it looks bad if a thread has >1k pages".

if someday we develop improved kerning science, we'll probably just merge all the threads or something. :P
