god like okay, using actual jim-crow era terminology to have a take on how you're being oppressed for having bigoted opinions while also using 50's era language to refer to LGBT people is like how old are you???
At this point I'm just thinking Athol is doing it on purpose so she can get rejected again and "prove" herself right, so she can keep wallowing and never have to make an effort to improve. She's already said she won't get help because she thinks it's useless, and now she's just declared that she'd prefer to stay a bigot.
Yeah, popping in to say on the record that any further posts along the lines of that 'sundown town' business are going to be wiggled.
My guess is either 1) those two references were in the same post, so Athol assumes that the message containing the AIDS thing had to have gone through. Or 2) the first reference went through and thus deemed acceptable, and she assumes the second one was of a similar caliber, so it must have gotten through too. Athol can confirm or correct me. For the record, the first mention of it did not get through, because it was in a post with something else.
i legitimately cannot think of any other reason for the hot take of "this is a place where i, an innocent bigot, will be lynched for expressing my harmless views" while using the incredibly loaded terminology that is used in african american communities to warn each other about places where their lives will be in danger if they stay after dark like there is no fucking place where that is appropriate
okay so, once upon a time, i was on a forum which had heated religious discussions, and in particular, it had a lot of people who harassed the Catholics, and called them names. and at one point, one of the Catholics made a remark in response to this, to the effect of "but i'm just a babylon-worshipping false christian, so what do i know", and... several of the anti-Catholic mods jumped on this as an admission, and tried to run with that. and they were misunderstanding her communication severely. i don't think Athol's point is that she actually wishes to be a bigot. it's that she's finding the requests made of her incomprehensible, and stressful, and upsetting, and it feels impossible and futile and like nothing counts as progress, so why not just give up and be bad and at least then she's not trying-and-failing. and i can sort of sympathize. observations: there's a lot of language about bigotry that has a lot of very heavy value judgments, sometimes implicit and sometimes explicit, that make it very hard to accept such an accusation. there's a definite weakness in communicating the distinction between "you are causing harm to group X" and "you personally hate group X". i suspect, given the vehemence of her hostility towards many people and groups, she does hold many of the positions she's accused of -- but possibly assumes everyone does and that's just normal, or isn't in a good place to challenge that. realistically, until she's sober, the whole thing is probably just going to upset her to no benefit.
yeah see i'd assume that the first time too but when you follow up by citing the tvtropes page about 'innocent bigot' to describe yourself, less so actually. athol also reliably uses /s to indicate sarcasm. It was missing in that post. and i still reserve the right to be supremely pissed about using my words as a jumping off point to declare she's gonna embrace it, especially as a i emphasized i wasn't making value judgements about her as a whole.
quoting this to emphasize it where @Athol Magarac can see it on its own Athol, please go to rehab none of these discussions are going to do anything but upset people (including you) until you can have them while sober
rehab sucks and is hard as shit, i am not even gonna lie. it's gonna be one of the hardest things you've ever done in your life. but it'll literally be saving your life and giving you a brand new lease on it and new opportunities and outlooks that you couldn't even imagine while drinking heavily as you are now. you just need to go in willing to bust your ass and do it no matter what, and do what they tell you while you do your medically safe detox and while you do your followup work afterwards, instead of going in thinking it'll fail or that you know better. you don't. the booze is talking more than you are, athol, and it has nothing good to say as your filter.
I...think Athol is 27? But I'm going off a fuzzy memory of her having said that somewhere on here, and I'm 1) not sure where she said it, and 2) not interested in burning spoons I don't have on looking for it.
nods. every other time I thought there was sarcasm and asked about it or someone else did it seemed to be Not going by clarification
I don't think sarcasm is the right word for the rhetorical device she uses. I think there are times where she knows her proposed take away is actually the opposite of what people are saying, but it conveys how upset she is and how everyone seems to contradict themselves in her eyes. I think there's more emotion in it than truth value. Again, standard disclaimer that Athol is welcome to correct me.
nods. I still want an apology and feel like that is very reasonable regardless of whether it was intended as a rhetorical device or not, it was pretty reprehensible and it hurt me to have my words used that way.
Oh absolutely! I'm just finding myself playing Athol translator tonight because I can usually kind of get what she's trying to say, but it seems like people read her wrong frequently (I don't blame them). But when that happens it itches at my brain until I point out that she might not be trying to say the thing people are upset about. That's not necessarily what happened here, and I think you are definitely due an apology. I just... words are hard :P
Pretty close. I don't recall getting a response to my bullet-points, so could someone tell me if there was a response? I'm giving up because it is futile. I accidentally used a dog-whistle before I even knew what it was, and now I'm branded. The way I'm being treated is disproportional to the crime. Where I grew up, (technically where my grandparents lived and I was in the next town over,) as of 2000 and I doubt it's changed, it was still a place where a POC wouldn't want to find themselves even during the daytime. So the word for that isn't as outdated as one might think.
Correct. Nope, only the bigoted things you say will be viewed as being bigoted. It stops when you stop saying bigoted things. Being in an environment were you absorb bigoted ideas uncritically and don't know that they are bigoted sucks. It takes a lot of work to unlearn them. But we have been very clear about where the line is. The only reason it keeps being a problem for you is because you keep doing it, then getting upset when people call you out on it.
Athol, among other frankly horrifying things, asked that this thread be moved to TCHGB in order to weed out unproductive responses. I have said no, because that strikes me as an attempt to control the narrative in a very public thread. That's not what TCHGB is for. If you don't want to keep using this thread, Athol, you don't have to.
I asked for clarification a couple of times. I can't figure out where the line is. It seems to be in a really weird place. Unless I'm getting misread a lot, just talking about something that exists is bigoted.
