Yes, that's the essence of it. Following bigotted rhetoric, even out of innocent belief, makes people who actually hold those views feel vindicated and supported. It's entirely possible to come across the rhetoric and never know what it is, and that's why when people tell you that something is a problem, the correct course of action is to 1) apologize 2) do one's best to eliminate it from one's thinking.

Sorry to jump in, but I do think that's what Athol is trying to get at too! Mainly that last paragraph:

I think she's putting a bit more emphasis on dogwhistle-as-a-concept being a primary driver than what you're saying, but she's asking if by publicly repeating these things in a way that asks 'what if this is really is correct', she helps make people like the shooter feel less alone, and more like they have mass support (which is right!)

That's a good point, Spock. I was mostly responding to:

@latitans Do you really think I read your page 39 post with any level of detail beyond "click link, forget about the reading until noticing it later, not really keeping track of why I'm reading it beyond piecing together that someone on this board wanted me to read this article" ? I can't remember what day it was, but there was another article linked from the resources thread and I got sidetracked before asking about what their point was because I couldn't figure it out.

So it's wrong to believe that Jews control the media. Then that means that we should go after the directors and producers that make Jewish jokes in shows because most of the jokes are probably anti semitic and the rest are cultural appropriation. Let's start with the people who made Big Bang Theory. (I'm not sure when it began but it would be a /s somewhere because I'm still confused and I'm pretty sure you're not telling me what I think you're telling me.) The point is, same page stuff and I think you(plural) focused so hard on the dogwhistle that you didn't realize what was behind it to make sure you weren't causing more damage. (AFAICT just with the laziest of pokings, the only non-Jew making antisemetic jokes is the Creator of Family Guy and he's bitter because of personal setbacks in a much more magnified version of me and Priscilla.)

What I'm willing to go to the mat for is that people should do a better job of explaining before giving me labels and a hard time about what I understand.

I meant to get to you sooner, but yes, both your points require a certain amount of understanding. Otherwise, I'm left with trying to apologize for the wrong thing and trying to trust rando on the internet over Wikipedia.

Still confused here. Is there an evil-scale or not? I'm beginning to feel like a social casualty of those fucktards.

There's no official evil scale and trying to formally rank all things by degree of badness is generally not a good idea. Claiming that you're equivalent to a mass-murderer is not good, but trying to define ranks for all possible flavors of bigotry is also a bad path to go down.

Also, I approved 'fucktards', but it might be a good idea to lean away from slurs and slur-adjacent words, especially because it's not always easy to tell if you're referring to the people you're talking to or someone else.

Are you...getting upset with me for thinking that you read a post?

Also, as the first links explains, “Jews control the media” is a different statement with different implications from “Jewish writers make self-deprecating jokes sometimes.”

I think a big problem with how you think about racism, homophobia, sexism, and other types of bigotry is that you base your ideas off of bad tv and TvTropes. The real world is not a sitcom, the rules of fiction do not apply.

considering how most of online communication consists of typing out and reading things, it is pretty standard here, and everywhere you go, for other people to expect and work off the assumption that you are reading their posts.

I rank 'tard as either something I should claim rights to out of pride, or a perfectly fine synonym for "moron" since the current medical designation is too much of a mouthful to corrupt into a slur. If you give me a list of good and bad things, I might follow it, but I'd rather not if it's too restrictive. "Those" wasn't a clear distinction?

As far as ranking evil... is it "being just a bit bad earns you disdain and everyone viewing comments as worse than what they are. therefore amplifying everything questionable into the worst possible interpretation"? Or is it "hey, they're not that far down this really steep slope that ends in a cliff. If we form a human chain, we might be able to pull them up."

I think someone decided that my belief about gays in the 90's have a correlation with mental problems... that it didn't have anything to do with bullying and being on the wrong end of society.

the people in various threads on this forum who tried, with very little progress to show for it, didn't do so bc they had to

they did so bc they thought you could learn and do better

admittedly, you are doing marginally better than you were back in june

but it's very little progress and you've fought everyone who tried to help you every step of the way

and honestly, the lack of progress is bc you physically can't learn these kinds of things until you get sober

    so please, go to rehab

If you don't have the understanding, then you err on the side of caution. We're talking about something that seriously hurts people, or at least has the potential to, so the deal is that if someone tells you you've hurt them, you apologize and trust that they know what hurts them. At the very least the people on this forum have been very forthcoming about why the things you said are hurtful.
I gathered that you've generally not understood those reasons very well because your brain is in no state to understand much of anything right now, but those explanations happened, and repeatedly so.
So yes, seconding @thegrimsqueaker again: go to rehab. get sober. Try again afterwards.

The only thing making you apologize for the wrong thing is your obsession with trying to defend yourself, because you care much more about whether you might be thought of as bad than whether you hurt people. Stop doing that, stop replacing everything people say with things you'd prefer them to have said, and things will get a lot better.

ok, look. it's fine to have conversations about very difficult fraught topics that you don't understand. it also fine to not have the spoons or ability to read long detailed explanations and articles.

it is NOT fine to do both of these things at once. you keep saying "make sure we're on the same page," but people have been TRYING to do that since minute one. you're the one who is unwilling or unable to read their explanations. stop yelling at people because you can't do the work you need to do to understand. and maybe stop trying to have these discussions until you are willing or able to do the reading.

(hint: rehab will help you immensely with this.)

On this point, why wouldn't Spock shut up when I tried to tell them in many ways that their talking to me hurts me?

And yeah, I don't understand why it was so harmful to believe that the media has a statistical significant proportion of Jewish people. I get that a certain phrase is the rallying cry of the bigots, but I just can't wrap my head around why such good and wonderful things that benefit everyone is somehow reason to do evil unto the people that are loosely associated.

I grew up Presbyterian. They hang an empty cross at the front of the church to emphasize that he isn't there anymore, he rose into heaven. I guess Catholics emphasize the messiah dying, since that's what they have hanging. We were taught Jesus dying was part of the plan, and that it was the honor of the Jews to help it along. Why would Catholics be angry about such an important thing?

I was wondering if the Jewish money-lender thing was true. It's so wonderful that they were exempt from the laws of the Christian Church and were able to let the economy be stimulated despite that foolishness. Other than some things that seem to be universal anyway, moralistic diversity is a good thing.

This isn't about spock at all, and even if it was, the point was to that you were telling factual untruths about spock and her interaction with you, and as long as you keep doing that she will reply because there's nothing that says that she has to bear being lied about by someone.

I'm not even going to touch the rest of this with a thirty foot pole because you're clearly in no mental state to sit in on a long lecture on culture and history and all it entails, because that's what the explanation would be. I'm not going to quote Kathy again because I don't wanna tag her, but

These are bad faith questions and unless you seriously reword to assure that they're not bad faith questions I absolutely refuse to engage with them.

That sounds like an extremely bad faith statement. calling the systematic exclusion of jewish europeans from guilds 'wonderful' because they 'stimulated the economy' by being forced into something that was then used as fuel to further discriminate against them and paint them as morally suspect is kind of... a lot. I don't think you have the historical context for a lot of these things and you should probably stop bringing them up until you do.

Yeah, gonna agree with the previous two posts.

Athol, you keep repeating these untrue, harmful, hateful things, because to you, they don’t seem bad. I and others try to explain why they’re untrue and harmful. These explanations are sometimes complicated, because they deal with historical contexts and structures.

You do not seem to be in a place where you can understand these explanations.

Until you can understand, it’s probably best to just not talk about this sort of thing.

The fact that your attempt to explain where you’re coming from included the claim that the Jews killed Jesus is strong evidence that you should stop talking until you’re willing and able to listen.

Athol Magarac I prefer reading posts without a lot of topics.

The first part was about Spock. I just wanted her to shut up. She should have started using a translator once we realized that I was reading her tone as as overly hostile. Most people respected that reaction images bothered me, but not that Spock was triggering me. (Mostly meme usage of trigger, but bordering on the more serious meaning.) To me, the mod hat obscures the face, so nothing was specifically directed at Spock.

And if anyone is lying, it's the mods. I could say "I like 6" and they'll wiggle me for "hating Y" when they do give a reason. There's also an outright admittance that they're wiggling things based on past history when someone else could say the same thing.

And I think we're going to have to define "bad faith questions" because right now I'm hearing "you must be trolling because there is no way you could seriously be this stupid."
