Hard agree on the mundane magic bit, but i think my absolute absolute favorite is 'multiple stories of the same historical events from different perspectives' as a source for conflicting yet weirdly theme-similar myths!
In visual media I also like details from appearance being used to denote group belonging and rank and such. Unified faction colorschemes, heraldry dress no matter how tacky, 'this amount of braids denotes x thing, other hairstyles say y' or stuff like that
