You know what's fun? AUs. Know what's even more fun? Crack AUs. I have a bad tendency to think up Alternate Universes and never actually writing them! So I'm going to give all these horrible abandoned universes a home here! We just finished talking about Goth-kid-AU!Naruto. So literally everything goes, canon compliant or totally out there, coffee shop, sports team, fantasy, sci-fi, high school, roadtrip, Mechas, whatever you can think up and want to just gush about, it can go here!
oh man i love AUs. one of the ones i can never seem to get tired of are soulmate AUs, it doesn't matter how sappy some of them can get, there's just something wonderful about two (or three, or four, or - well, you get what i'm saying) people who were made for each other. especially when it's an unconventional soulmate AU; the ones that fall into things like "perfect enemies", or "perfect best friends". i've even seen a soulmate pairing that was "perfect mentor/mentee" before. the fics that really delve into how the soulmate world works, how fallible or infallible the system is, whether or not it's based on biology or magic or something else entirely, those are the AUs i love most. basically just world building and exploring characters in different ways. it is wonderful. i could go on about other AUs and how much i love them, but i don't wanna clog up the thread with what basically amounts to a bunch of nerdy babbling.
ive been perpetually writing a doctor who/homestuck au for about......five years?? aradia is the doctor equivalent. the first chapter is mostly done and its basically her dragging around karkat. sollux is the head of torchwood. 90% of the work ive put into it is super elaborate worldbuilding with political factions and new star system arrangements and EVERYTHING its terrible i love aus
I decided that my first serious attempt at writing longfic would be a semi-illegal mecha boxing ring AU.
ooh i also just remembered the time that my friend and i were determined to write a disney!Hercules AU fic where herc was a boxer in 1920s (or was it 1860s? i don't remember) brooklyn who was originally from a farm upstate and wanted to live out his dream of being a star zeus was a mobster or something, and pegasus was a sky-blue cadillac hades was..... a rival mobster phil was a very jewish bagel store owner! he had a history of boxer gambling and training, had given up, and was convinced by zeus to sponsor his illegitimate son also for some reason shang from mulan was a boxer too, and they were a ship somehow?
I am admittedly always a slut for high school AUs, but I try to do something interesting with them when I write mine. Like, my current main WIP is shippy interpersonal bullshit WITH GHOSTS. Also, I really want to write a Machine Of Death AU? Like, dunno what fandom it'd be for, but yeah.
What do you prefer done with the character-important powers/abilities —try to find real world analogues? Like giving a character who can fly in the canon a pilot's license or a skydiving hobby?
@Bel Capricorn so youre basically me and @IvyLB, gotcha ::D basically one of us gets a stupid idea and is like "yknow what, imagine [scenario]" and suddenly its four hours later we're nearly dead from either laughing or crying at the horror we've created and it's glorious.
gangstastuck!postGame!futurestuck!fantroll! Homestuck AU need I say more. (i could actually say more but in all actuality it is not that interesting of an AU. at least, what I've mostly done with it is only interesting to me. and the actual short fics I've written for it are 1) not finished, 2) not likely to be finished, and 3) not likely to be shared, so.)
I love magical girl AUs, college AUs, Superhero AUs... if they're not human, I love doing human AUs, and if human I love doing monster or animal AUs
