Every so often you just get an episode of something where the subtitles are just a bit off. Usually it’s not quite this obvious:






The words are correct in the last one, but the comma slays me.

 

...Isn't it "the baffled kingdom chorusing Hallelujah"?

 

Nope. Baffled king is the correct line.

 

I mean, I knew that part, but Saul was also a king (and David wasn't king yet when playing for him), so I was interpreting the line as "Saul's kingdom being confused but grateful about this whole situation" because I wasn't sure why David would be baffled. (There's also religious oddness with the line as I was hearing it given the baggage of the word "Hallelujah," but.)

 

I thought that song was about being dumped by someone

 

I mean it is a pretty good break up song I think.

 

It's about a failed relationship and about religion. It's a very, very heavily Jewish song, with a lot of references to David and Samson.

 

It's a complicated song with a lot of layers, is the point here. :::PPP

 

It’s a very tightly constructed song, musically. The first stanza is describing itself as much as it’s creating a metaphor. It’s supposed to be a secret chord that David played. It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth. I believe those are the notes you’re singing on the scale the song is using there. Then you do have a minor fall and a major lift, in the notes. The words in the last screenshot are correct, but the line is usually understood as King David, feeling baffled while composing “Hallelujah”. With the comma it reads to me like, hallelujah! the baffled king got his act together and is composing!
