The self-published Kindle stories I thought were flops have made one or two sales, so I'm wondering if I should write more.

I know, I couldn't believe it :D Apparently it had just been marked down from $60, too.

Of course now I have introduced the terrible temptation of online used videogame retailers into my financial life which is not ideal

It's a thing that uses pulsed hot air to "fry" things, so that you only need a tablespoon or so of oil.

dude, those are so cool. do they really work as advertised? you just toss the item in oil to coat, and it's as if you deep fried it? if it's true, i might get one, because i hate hate hate having to use half a bottle of oil just so i can have some tempura with my udon.

Pretty close! I found with potatoes I had to use a full spoon of oil when the instructions said half and let them cook for a bit longer than the instructions said even when I cut them really small, so be prepared to experiment, but I successfully got a result which passed for fried.

NEW WORK BOOTS NEW WORK BOOTS
    [IMG]
They’re the same brand as my much-beloved Old Work Boots, which as of now are retiring to become a fashion item only. As you can see they got thoroughly trashed during my ten months in americorps. I would have gotten the same style too, but they’re either discontinued or not available to individual consumers, I guess.

But! The new ones are so nice!! They’re steel toe instead of composite, a half size smaller than the old ones so they come close to actually fitting me, they’re insulated and electrical hazard rated, and the leather is sturdy but not so tough that they’ll be painful to break in. If I take care of them properly - which I plan to try to do this time - they should last for years. And I get to wear them to welding class tomorrow, I’m so excited!!

The newest series on Dice Friends is called Bylaw & Order, and it's literally about how the sausage gets made.

Rather, collecting signatures to set better standards for sausage manufacture, in D&D 5e's version of Ravnica. Kathleen is a master of the low-stakes but high-energy gamemastering.

I just appreciate that the series about navigating bureaucracy and legal minutia is about sausage-making. It's such an obvious joke but it makes me so, so happy.

There's an old saying, "Laws are like sausages, it's better not to see how they get made." It refers to the nitty-gritty details that are generally out of sight of the average person, but which result in things those people like. The general idea is that as tasty as sausages are, the process of making them is kinda gross, so most people are happier not seeing it. Similarly, making laws (good or bad) involves a lot of dealing and compromise that not everyone likes to see, but the alternative is utter intransigence which is usually worse.

I've been having decent luck at getting work done, and one of the files I did has been approved by QA already - and with only 5.30% changes needed! (The ideal is 0% changes, but you're allowed up to about 30% changes before QA is going to just reject it completely. The usual average is around 15-20% changes, and that's what I was expecting considering that this was one of the first pieces I've done.)
