it's been unseasonably warm for a few days, so a lot of snow melted. since the ground was still frozen, the water puddled on top instead of sinking in. now it's turned snot-cracking cold, and everyone's back yard is a skating rink.

time to invest in grass seed futures.

    Casimir is best evil overlord.
Casimir is best evil overlord. (Also, is this going to be an ongoing thing where he bitches at length about animal care? such as in the case where someone tried to assassinate him via venomous spiders and/or scorpions and he scolded the assassins. it gives me weird fuzzy feelings.)

is svetlana a character you've previously introduced on the old tumblr? Who is she besides previous overlord's daughter?

yes, absolutely. treating animals well is IMPORTANT. *serious nodding*

i don't remember if i talked about her on my tumblr at all. she's 12, and she's so much like casimir in so many ways that they drive each other kind of nuts, but eventually she'll be a sort of sarcastic sidekick, and he'll be -- well, being a better dad than her actual dad isn't hard, and he's honestly not very dadly, but -- sort of a Cool Weird Uncle who doesn't stop her from getting up to shenanigans as long as they're not completely horrible.

if you're familiar with night vale, imagine if tamika flynn was a gothic lolita. she's murdery and terrifying and adorable and traumatized, and she likes purple velvet ribbons, dammit.

Now I have even more warm fuzzy feelings. (For complicated reasons related to certain book(s) by certain author(s.)) This sounds incredibly cute, and incredibly terrifying. Stalemate sounds like it's going to so much fun. :D

all day my body's been threatening to puke a rainbow if i eat anything more intense than buttered rice, and then suddenly at bedtime it was like "where's my garlic butter????"

me: i ain't stupid, pal. you're getting leftover cheese burrito reheated in a little olive oil. and no extra cheese, either.

my body: ok but drown it in hot sauce!

me: things that are not happening: that.

the upside of this situation is that plain cheese burrito with olive oily toasty bits and a thin drizzle of mild taco sauce was amazingly flavorful.

the downside is that even that might've been too much, and my stomach kind of hurts. bluh.

fish n chips from the quarterback club again. bit harder to make myself eat than some other times, but this appears to be pretty consistently food. the fries, not so much. but mild white fish, battered not breaded, with lemon juice, is something my sensory whatsit will accept most days. good to know.

poutine is magic. all the calories for a day of ice fishing, packed into one little paper boat.

if my spine was less fucky, i could eat an order of poutine and then go cross country skiing and come home with my coat unzipped. billows of steam coming up when i flap the front of my sweater. so much power! power not meant for sedentary man to consume, alas.

Weird question: I tried poutine once but found the texture a bit off-putting. Is it normally kinda slimy-textured (in which case it’s just my sensory bs, no patch on people who love it), or did I have less-than-ideal poutine?

EDIT: Also I will also volunteer to take your chips!

Vaguely related to fish and chips. So,one time at the grocery store, I saw a bag of frozen filets of fish, and it had a picture of a serving suggestion on it. And I think they were going for "fish and chips" without realizing that the "chips" were fries, and not chips as in "thinly sliced chips like Lays." That is to say, they had the latter instead of the former. I snickered, as one does.

I have never had poutine! The ingredient combo (fries/cottage cheese/gravy) does not seem like a good combo, but then, I am not terribly fond of cottage cheese.

I don't know if the term varies regionally, but the kind of cheese curds used in poutine are pretty different from the kind I'd think of as cottage cheese - as I recall cottage cheese doesn't have the excess liquid pressed out of it, while poutine cheese curds do, giving them a much firmer consistency closer to a finished cheese.

according to canadian friend: if the cheese curds don't squeak, they ain't proper.

When you can't get cheese curds I've heard halloumi is a pretty good substitute. It's also what my Canadian friend used when she made us poutine in Brighton which was very tasty :D
