little bit, yeah. :/ except on tumblr i can enforce my boundaries. i think my brain was doing one of those 'what if' scenarios and this one was "what if you couldn't enforce your boundaries in any way?" and i guess the answer turns out to be "keep fucking trying and get really really mad" which... come on brain, we already know that, we experienced it from kindergarten through fifth grade.
my minecraft game has tips on the loading screen and one of them is "large fossils can be found beneath swamps and desserts" i'm always like *looks under my choco cake* ooh dinosaur!
i have now watched all the episodes of "that time i got reincarnated as a slime" that exist, and i love rimuru SO MUCH. you know what impresses me? that somehow the mix of genderless adorable monster child and hot bisexual dad isn't even slightly creepy. i think it's the way he does stuff like refuse to make an adult female form because it looks like his dead friend and that would be disrespectful. most anime would either go with "no because i'm a guy dammit" or "whoohoo boobies" but he's like "no i am not cosplaying her that's too sad" and i love him for it. and the way he goes all blushu about getting used as a boob rest or when ninja oni boy does something cool, but he's never a perv about it. he does not seem to actually want to be sexual in any way, he just likes being around pretty people. i also love the way he's HELLA OP but it doesn't break the plot because it's not an edgelord power fantasy, it's just that fighting isn't the point of the story. the plot is about forging alliances and making friends, not about who's got the bigger lightning attack. it's just a really good show and i'm so happy it exists. @Vast Derp idk if you ever check in here but if you get this notification, https://www.crunchyroll.com/that-time-i-got-reincarnated-as-a-slime i think you will like it. the protagonist seems like someone you'd come up with, but less traumatized. :D
being married is the longest slumber party. i meant to just have a cuddle and sort of mumble to seebs about the writey problem i'm mulling over. it turned into a raucous brainstorm session and we both ended up wide awake and laughing ourselves into a pretzel. i am now full of Ideas and Enthusiasm and Value and probably won't sleep for quite some time. i hope seebs was able to settle back down. :P
hmmm i want to watch a tv while i knit and cuddle my heating pad to my trouble hip. but what i most want is more 'slime' and the next ep doesn't go up til monday. anyone want to give me recs? something light-hearted and fun but unusual, without the creepy anime tropes we're all so tired of? i feel sure there's something All The Kids watched recently that i haven't, but if so, the details have slipped my mind. BNHA is too serious for me rn, as a data point.
It’s not an anime, but have you watched Red vs. Blue? It’s an excellent comedy web series by rooster teeth that’s been running so nice like 2002. Starts out as a parody of team-based first person shooter games (specifically Halo) but after the first couple seasons it really takes off and goes places with some fucking fantastic emergent storytelling. Later seasons get more dramatic and feelsy, but it never loses the core of humor. Contains some of my favorite characters from anything ever. Also contains some ableism, sexism, etc. in the earlier seasons, but gets much better later on - it’s the best example I know of creators learning from their mistakes and genuinely working to fix them. It’s on the rooster teeth website and YouTube and the first 5 seasons at least are on Netflix Also if you haven’t watched it, try Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. No prior knowledge of ygo is required for enjoyment and it’s one of the funniest things I have ever watched
Re: abridged series, I would like to add Sword Art Online Abridged, which is both a) extremely hilarious and b) actually much more coherent and compelling in its plot, themes, and characterization than the source material.
(Fakeedit: Probably darker than desired right now, though, since SAO is a "you die in the game, you die in real life" series with shock deaths, and SAO Abridged mostly sticks to the plot and cheerfully embraces making the protagonists complete assholes. But it's still hilarious and I highly recommend it for if/when some dark humor is palatable.)
thanks, guys! not what i'm in the mood for right now, but those sound like things i'll like in general. i'm looking to get immersed in a nice place for a while, you know? so web comedy's not gonna do it. i found one about an interdimensional restaurant that's really cute, and it's not immersive enough to really get my mind off my hip but it's very soothing nonetheless. although it is making me SO HUNGRY. i don't mind a bit of darkness if it's sort of... contained? if that makes any sense? like i wish i could watch xxxholic again for the first time, because even though there were some pretty creepy or sad moments, they stayed in their episode, they didn't make the protagonist's life depressing. mystery solved, justice or mercy applied, and then back to being jeeves for a weird godthing. it worked for me. i'm having a real hard time going someplace where My Ass Is Stabbing Me In The Ass isn't the dominant tone of all existence, but i escaped for a while thanks to 'slime' and i fully believe there are other stories that will do the trick. *optimism face* *mr brightside plays* *parade of cats in band costumes*
i'm trying to play a game with myself where i summarize characters in three words exactly. for instance: gareth: sexy action nerd galley: sassy straight friend svetlana: angry murder puff bloodclaw the devastator: an actual pokemon captain valerian: area denial mom the duchess: one classy dame zuzu: orbital bowie strike gareth's as-yet-unnamed steward: tactical intelligence sasset but i can't come up with a three word one for casimir. they all keep coming out too long or too tangential.
I remember Recovery of a MMO junkie to be vaguely okay in the tropes department if you are okay with romance, and high score girl was okay if a little heavy handed in the comedic violence. There's an anime about sumo this season that was a bit formulaic but good for a sports anime. And if you dont mind a bit of nonsense there was Sakamoto Desu Ka a few seasons ago.
Oh, seconding recovery of an mmo junkie! It’s a very sweet romance with good characters. The mc is Relatable
Oh, there's only a few episodes out and I have no idea if this will fall into what you want to watch, but Kaguya-sama Wants To Be Confessed To has an anime now. It's about the top two students at a super-exclusive high school (the titular Kaguya, the daughter of a super-rich family and the student council vice-president, and the president, a scholarship boy from a lower-class family) who are in a massive, convoluted, passive-aggressive war to each try to get the other one to confess love to them. There's Death Note levels of over the top mind games over things like "deciding where the class vacation should go" and "talking about the weather." It's hilarious.
Hm. I'm not sure if Mob Psycho 100 is light-hearted enough, but mostly it's silly and fun, and although it does dip into some heavier topics it always comes out optimistic. Despite how weird the name can come across to English speakers, it's just the main character's nickname + slang for 'psychic' - Mob is a 14-year-old boy with psychic powers. idk how intentionally he's written as autistic but he's definitely autistic, and he's portrayed in a really kind and understanding way, with a family that loves and supports him even when they don't really understand him. Also there's lots of cool action scenes and a distinct lack of creepy anime tropes.
Actually. Wait. Have you read Dungeon Meshi. It's a manga about a group of RPG adventurers who, needing to retrieve their teammate's corpse so they can resurrect her but being completely out of money for food, resort to finding ways to cook and eat the monsters. It's about equal parts humor, monster xenobiology and ecology, and cooking manga.
I’ve started watching OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes! recently, and I’m really enjoying it—the creator used to work on SU and there are some similarities (in a good way), but it’s been more consistently lighthearted, at least from what I’ve seen, and hella cute! It’s DEFINITELY more of an Actual Kids’ Show than most of the kids’ shows I watch, but you might enjoy it and it’s probably a good fun distraction! And the episodes are only 11 minutes which might be a good thing? (Also one of the main characters is canon bi and even is seen with a bi pride sticker on her bike helmet at one point!)
Dungeon Meshi is great. Highly recommended, I had Marcille as an avatar for ages and probably will again in the future
feeling unloved and unlovable, and very grotesque. despite being on prednisone AND indomethacin i have horrible sausage fingers, the hip is not better and i don't feel like it's getting better, and i get awful gas whenever i eat anything, which is great because my meds have to be taken with food. i feel like nothing but a pile of needs and smells. there are no comfortable positions. i've had about 2 hours of not-really-sleep. i'm just... not feeling the whole Being Alive thing today and would like to ditch this meat sack. i don't want to die, i just want to bail and live somewhere else.
