i only ever read one hanahaki story, because i'd never heard of it and was curious. i got about halfway in before i was like "ok but looming death is a pretty good incentive to change your feelings about someone" and tabbed out. like, if regular people can stop obsessing on someone because they said 'not interested', miss random protagonist can stop obsessing because the alternative is fucking dying. jesus. edit: which kind of highlights the element of creepy emotional blackmail going on in these, doesn't it? they said no. you need to stop. dying at them is not cool.
Hanahaki disease but the person with it is someone with BPD, a horror story in 500 chapters: Ao3 Edition FEATURING DANTE FROM THE DEVIL MAY CRY SERIES 2.5.8 Final Remix Chapter Prologue
you just made me realize i would not even bat an eye if hanahaki came up in a squeenix game, especially not if it was the newest addition of Kingdom Hearts Plot Elements To Make Things Nomura Levels Of Overcomplicated. mind you this is not a bad thing. it's just a special thing that needs its own containment zone.
holy shit you're right HOLY SHIT. Oh my god. It would fucking work with KH or something like it so well. Fuck you could probably slot it into FoW neatly, too.
I just get caught up on where the petals are coming from. do they peel off the inside of the trachea? do humans have special flower-petal-producing organs in their thorax? how tf would this even evolve it makes no sense I mean I know it's supposed to be a magic thing but still. HOW.
while we're at it i feel like Yoko Taro would have a FIELD TRIP with the concept, between NieR and Drakengard. and he'd lean on the horror aspect of it too.
Hmmm idea: instead of it being death the more the disease progresses you become more and more obsessed with the object of ur affection. Makes more sense with the "curing it removes the feelings completely" and like. I feel like the metaphor works better that way? But yeah most of my issue w Hanahaki is "this could work w a dreamy magical realism tone but that never seems to be what they're going for"
I mean at least with FoW's worldbuilding the flowers could be born from like uh...a kind of...materialization of unfulfilled, obsessive pining. Since intent and feeling literally create magic power, called Will. And can be used to summon shit and what not. But like instead of creating a giant fireball, instead you're internalizing this weird thing you can't let go of and it is resulting in flowers being created in your throat or stomach or some shit? And then you vomit them out? I'm not sure how KH's metaphysics would handle this other than IT HAPPENS FOR THE AESTHETIC. I'm sure someone who knows the lore better might be able to bullshit up an explanation that works with the setting though. Honestly, I'm now really kind of intrigued by the idea of trying to find like magical explanations that explain the How Of The Flower Coughing up. Since magic isn't just WHOO MAGIC. Even in the most WHOO MAGIC settings, there's still some kind of underlying logic behind it and some of this could explain how them little bastards are getting made. holy fuck. yaro hanahaki would be radical. We'd get so much out of the horror and tragedy elements of it, and we'd get to learn about the obsessive nature of love and how toxic love can destroy us and also this leads to genocide or some shit. And there's a chick with a really good ass. I can't even imagine how the fuck his explanation would work. But it would.
If what I've skimmed from the Drakengard 3 LP is correct, Spoiler: Drakengard / NieR spoilers The flower growing from the main character's eye is the antagonist of the game and in a noodly sort of way, the antagonist of the entire franchise. Like if the flower is allowed to blossom all the way the lady turns into the same sort of being as the final superbosses of Drakengard 1. Anyway the Drakennier universe is heckled up enough that Hanahaki can't possibly make it worse.
I have actually written a rough summary of the Darker Than Black hanahaki arc with Weird Gate Flowers that could totally exist.
listen if people's bodies without hearts can simultaneously turn into hot anime boys with fake emotions or cuttle fish sock puppets with zipper faces stealing random concepts for the hell of it, i'm sure nomura can make up some explanation for hanahaki. Fuckin. Make it A New Kind Of Complication to queer the Light/Darkness binary. who heckin knows crystallized overly emotion filled Memories (tm) given the memory pods in chain of memories/2 look like flowers? who knows. Spoiler: all the yoko taro game spoilers I MEAN There's the Drakengard 3 thing mentioned by Yggi and there's also the whole thing where NieR Gestalt/Replicant's magic system literally exists bc the screaming cosmic horror defeated in the joke-y/over hardcore ending of Drakengard 1 got teleported into actual real life tokyo alongside Angelus and while the Queen Beast causes White Chlorination Syndrom, Angelus' particles make Magic Happen (tm) and with the implications of Drakengard 3's intoner sisters/parasitic flowers being linked directly to the queen beast, and the heavy flower symbolism everywhere in NieR and NieR: Automata it almost feels like a set up for something LIKE hanahaki tbqh
(or they could make weird flower enemies that cause hanahaki to be Marluxia's servants in the same way as the Unversed are Vanitas' servants. I think that's more likely unless they kill Marluxia off in KH3)
okay but this is just increasing my horrible urge to write Really Fucked Up pearlrose hanahaki bullshit THANKS SEEBS AON
I actually can´t? I can avoid contact with the person of the obsession and eventually it will die off on it´s own, but I can´t actively do a damn thing about the feelings themselves, at least effectively. Feelings gonna feeling and all I can really do is refrain from acting on them. ETA: obviously, refraining from acting on them is kinda important, whch is why I mentioned it. I´m not saying "Waaa I can´t help myself!" I´m saying "I can refrain from doing the thing but I´m still gonna feel the thing."
Come to think of it Drakengard gave us the phrase 'a love that crushes like a mace' shit yeah bring it on. If you die of Flowers you become a cursed-ass tree. White fruit that tastes like ashes and longing.
yeah, i will definitely accept it for fairytale tragedy/horror. not so much for slice of life comedy. :P
I'm a big sucker for hanahaki as tragedy. There was a really delightful Johnmerle fic that I felt did things well... But in the other hand i adore soulmate concepts so I'm good at ignoring nonsense As for my own gripe boy i wish I could write slowburn in the way people will actually like. They SAY they want it fifty years slow but when it happens.. .
Yeah, it's definitely something done for the Tragically and Aestheticly Suffering factor 99% of the time, which is... Yeah I just find gratuitous angst porn boring. Especially when it's over nothing more life-alteringly serious as "my crush doesn't like me back."
I like this fanfic very much and im not gonna stop reading it but no author, necromany is Not summoning demons. It literaly means magically raising the dead. WORDS MEAN THINGS. IT HAS NECRO RIGHT THERE IN IT!
