    but lory needs mittens :(

i think my options right now are 1) try to knit tight, 2) freeball a pattern using part of the chart, or 3) use a different pattern with a looser gauge.

    i really should've looked at that gauge of '36 stitches per 4 inches' and gone NOPE but the pattern is so beyootiful ;_;

dang, i need a name for the human language in stalemate. i absolutely refuse to call it 'common', and only nonhumans call it 'human', but p much everyone on the southern three quarters of the whole continent speaks the same language, so calling it after one of the countries would be awkward. especially since neither of the two countries this is focused on would ever admit to speaking a language named after another one, so it'd be one language with two names, which is super confusing for the reader. but naming it after a country none of the action takes place in would be weird.

i kind of want to call it 'central' or something, to kind of echo the way midwestern english is the Official Correct American English, but languages don't get called things like that. when i look at real world 'common' languages, latin for instance is named after a region, and sanskrit basically means 'liturgical' or 'scriptural'. 'lingua franca' just means french... in latin. which is dumb if you ask me but they didn't.

and then on top of that, when casimir meets the orcs, he'll be speaking a weird northern dialect of it, and the orcs have orcish accents, so even though they're all technically speaking the same language they probably won't understand half of what the other is saying. how the hell do i write that without it being all clunky and immersion-breaky?

today is frustration day at work for jesses. but at least i'm working. i can sit in my chair and i'm not distracted by pain much, and i don't have brain fog, yay!

Suggestion: google translate the word "central" into a bunch of different languages until you find one you like the sound of and then change a couple of sounds.

You could also name it after a country that doesn’t exist anymore but which the current nations in that area are descended from, like if all the countries in the former territory of the Roman Empire still spoke Latin. Unless that wouldn’t work with your worldbuilding.

I'd suggest that. And then you can explain the variations the same way that we differentiate Brazilian and European Portuguese - they're more different than American and British English, but still the sameish language.

What kinda language is it anyway? Are we talking more or less one language, like latin, or thr bastard child of about fourteen, like englisch?
If its the latter you you go with something like "trade" or "traveler" via the translate and change sounds method.

    seebs' mom Yes, really!

Chinese putonghua is often called "Standard Chinese" although putong itself is more like "ordinary." British has "received pronunciation," although that refers to elite rather than common speech. "Tradetalk" could allude to the formation of a lingua franca. Pidgin and creole both refer to languages created by a community with no language in common.

I sort of thought lingua franca meant "free speech" with free serving as a prefix as it does in words like freehold and freebooter, but google informs me that franca means Frankish (and that the term is Italian). This is complicated because France was named for the Franks, but they were Germanic tribes that took over Gaul. "We're from all over, but we all know the freespeech," would tell the reader on first mention what kind of a language it was.

you know, i'm kind of starting to get attached to the idea of the language having a bunch of names, all of which kind of mean like, "you know, that one language, the one everybody knows." so maybe it gets referred to as 'freespeech' and 'ordinary' and 'plainspeech' and so forth, and maybe technically it's a grab bag of havenite, czinsistani, four other human languages, and enough orc and elf loanwords to make the spelling weird, but really it's just... what everybody speaks when they're talking to somebody from not-around-here.

which is perilously close to just doing the d&d thing of 'common', except that it doesn't bother me when it's got a good reason to be that way. especially if people are speaking their own regional languages and dialects at home. less fourth-wall-breaky that way.

    thanks, y'all.

ok i'm not going to make a separate vent thread just for negative feels, since i'm not very negative very often, and when i do it's usually stuff that wouldn't bother anyone really. but this is bugging me so i'm spoilering it.

i no longer trust my body to heal. i feel like something undead, like i'm just slowly but inevitably deteriorating, rotting from the inside. i visualize my bones as kind of soft and crumbly with black patches, and my flesh is pulpy with bruises. i feel like a monster. i don't smell like myself, either; i haven't since my surgery. i think the antibacterial wash they had me use killed my usual body odor bacteria, and then i picked up some other strain in the hospital, and i smell super wrong. my digestion's screwed up, and i'm wondering if my gall bladder is going, and that gets me thinking about how luka's gallbladder was actually necrotic before they took it out -- how would i know? i'm in so much pain so much of the time, and on painkillers the rest, could i be masking something catastrophic? but living without painkillers isn't an option. anyway, probably it's the painkillers that are messing up my digestion. i just know all my systems are a mess.

now this thing where i've lost feeling in big patches of my left leg, oh god i hate it so much. the numb areas from my chest surgery were already kinda driving me up the wall, but they were a fair tradeoff for not having boobs. this isn't a trade for anything, though. this is just. i went to the courthouse on a cold day, and walked very carefully on icy sidewalks and didn't fall down, and sat on a hard bench for no more than 15 minutes, and the result was more than a week flat on my back, and permanent nerve damage. what am i supposed to do with that?

what's next? my doctors seem to think it's possible to get better instead of worse, but it keeps just.. not. happening. at this point i'm reduced to tracking the progress of cat scratches on my hand to reassure myself that i do still heal, i'm not actually a corpse.

if i let myself accept that i will never be better, i'll never be able to hike or travel or even go for a car ride in cold weather, i'm going to have a real bad time. so i'm not accepting that.

I can at least back up your thinking that the digestion stuff is painkiller-related; my dad just had a total knee replacement and apparently the real struggle after navigating between agony/goofily high is just getting his whole gi system right again. it's been like two weeks now and they had to switch some medication around to help with that.

for me personally-and in assuming for most people, smell is Super Powerful for brain okayness. I think it's like, backup instincts for "is this good food or death food" probably. I know you cant do anything about internal bacteria, but maybe resetting your smell might help?

my boyfriend was washing his hair with some vinegar mixture for a while-he stopped because he stopped smelling like Anything, and it really freaked him out, but I'm wondering if it's an option for you to try something like that, and then get some old sheets/clothes from storage that smell more like you, and wear that???

but extreme witnessed, I feel for you, and I hope it gets brighter for you

so much of my theological perspective is informed by my experience of petting devy cat while saying lovingly, "you've been fighting with meenah haven't you, you sinner cat, you wrathful girl, you're so full of sin and wrath."

Someone read that caffeine tightens blood vessels and thought it would be effective to reduce face redness, basically. So it is misinterpreting chemistry

A peel is Not Like That But It Sure Can Feel Like It Because It Is Technically A Controlled Chemical Burn
