man I understand why Mob is difficult to characterize but writers in this fandom reeeeeally love handing him the idiot ball don’t they
Man I haven't jumped onto mp100 fic but like Mob seems to have kind of a hard time in school but in text he's also introspective and observant? He's not fighty about some stuff but he has his own sound judgement calls Idk that sounds like a disservice to Mob dang :/
Yeah. I’ve had to click away from several otherwise good fics because the author basically wrote him as a little kid. People tend to see his social obliviousness and make him just generally dense (which I gotta say is especially :/ considering how heavily autistic-coded he is). That’s not to say that there aren’t any good fics, though - I’ve read a couple that absolutely blew me away, characterization and all. The problem is that the rest of the fandom is having a hard time living up to their standard :(
I can see where they're coming from, as it's one of the core conceits of the plot that Mob has fallen for a con that's made amusingly transparent to the audience. Or at least that's how people seem to interpret it - I'm half convinced Mob had figured everything out by chapter 1 and just didn't care. Partly because he doesn't actually seem to be stupid or easy to fool.
Yeah, I understand why people get that impression for sure and I’m not up in arms about it, it just bothers me to read. Spoiler: manga spoilers I think Reigen is a bit of a blind spot for Mob. The knowledge that Reigen has psychic powers and can therefore help Mob control his own powers is a pillar of Mob’s mental stability, so he dismisses things that might have tipped him off because obviously Reigen is so much wiser and more experienced that he must be right. That does change over the course of the series as Mob gains other meaningful relationships, though. (Did he know at the end of the separation arc? I thought he did but then Reigen did the dramatic reveal in the finale which confused me)
Intellectually I get why fic tags shouldn't be sarcastic, but I really miss "Endeavor's A+ Parenting"
Spoiler I interpreted it as Reigen actually admitting his fakeness and admitting that he used Mob as a sign of closeness and grounds mob with his powers. Cause Reigen was exposed by others during the separation arc but this is him willingly telling Mob himself that he is fake Since the whole thing about Mob and his powers is his fear of it, and he came to Reigen for help all those years ago, and Reigen giving advice which Mob took to heart When Mob was talking to ???% they did refer to Reigen as that guy who was just taking advantage of Mob. So Reigen like being actually honest with Mob is letting down one of his barriers to his student figure I'm not sure I'm like explaining stuff properly, but this was how I understood that scene Eta clarified my sentences
Spoiler: manga spoilers Yeah that would make sense! It's a functionally useless but emotionally meaningful moment, just like almost everything Reigen does <3
oh, and a related gripe - when people rob Reigen of his silver tongue and +18 to all bluff checks. let the man be good at stuff, I know he acts like an idiot sometimes but he’s actually very good at what he does
Dear author, throwing the reader in at the deep end is great for action scenes, not so great for porn. Spoiler: NSFW You cant just start things with a dick already in a butt. Its jarring.
dear ficcer, you are doing a very good job in general, but when you mention 'agent carter' in a captain america fic you do need to specify whether you mean peggy or sharon. you're known for your innovative AU's so for all i can tell this is one where steve and bucky have a modern origin and peggy's running shield ops. plus you're writing from bucky's POV and you've specified he's taken the shield so steve can step out of the public eye, which means, in comicverse at least, that he and sharon are on first name terms as teammates; you've got him referring to romanov as 'natasha', he should refer to carter as 'sharon'. or if they're using callsigns, 'thirteen', not 'carter'. this very gentle grump brought to you by the fifteen minutes i spent backreading the entire fic trying to figure out whether it was an AU or not.
Current gripe- large fandom has large cast, and it's hard to find the difference between "tagged character features in this fic" and "tagged character appears in this fic" looking at you, Iida.
ugh yeah same my kingdom for either 1) some kind of separate tag category for Primary Relationships and Primary Characters vs “this relationship is mentioned”/“this character appears in the background,” or 2) people stop tagging characters/ships who are firmly in the background
That makes finding yuri fics in some shit absolutely hellish unless it's female dominated casts or a yuri series.
Tagging background characters/ships is the bane of my goddamn existence and part of why I refuse to tag for any character that doesn't have a major speaking role now.
Yeah, sometimes you luck out at someone started a "[character]-centric" tag but they aren't consistently used or reliable. And by this point you can't really make major changes to how the tag system works because there's ten years of fanfic on there that won't magically re-tag itself to standard.
