Gripe: people who hit every single one of the category options when posting their fic, because maybe what if someone in the background maybe kisses for once? Tagging your M/F fic with M/M as well (or tagging your M/M fic with F/F, or Gen, or whatever) when you know damn well that 80% of the narrative focus is going to be on the F/M couple only makes me note your name and make a point of never reading anything you post ever. edit: Secondary gripe: what is the LOGIC behind posting a fic that's nothing but a title? No tags, no summary, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, no author note at the beginning, no series description, nothing. If AO3 let you get away with not picking a category/rating/fandom, I'm getting the feeling this person would avoid picking any of those too. Just. What?
legitimate and sincere question I've been Stressing about for a while: what if I'm doing a polyamorous group and giving screentime to different relationships? would tagging all of them (in addition to Multi) be okay or should I avoid the fuck out of that? like right now I have an ongoing fic where it's two girls and two guys and they're almost all dating each other, but I also dedicate different chapters to focusing on different interpersonal relationships...uh anyway yes that's something I've been [SCREAM] about for a while
ah. the thing behind why i don't bother looking for f/f fic in a lot of fanbases UNLESS the cast is primarily or exclusively women.
This I think would be fine with me since it sounds like, yes, these sorts of relationships are all getting a decent amount of screen time. I know my issue with this labeling thing is that a lot of fics that are labeled f/f aren't actually f/f-centric/do not have a significant chunk of the fic dedicated to an f/f relationship. They're just. Background lesbians. Or background gays in terms of kingstarscream's complaint. Like so long as They're A Significant And Big Deal and so long as they're not just relegated to 'Oh man! The lesbians held hands. ONCE,' then it's fine I think?
HONESTLY that's pretty much exactly the situation multitagging things like F/F, M/M, and multi makes sense to me--because they're all getting screentime, there's enough draw to one or the other that I can go 'yeah, okay, I'm interested in this', and it's not like... lying, I guess, about the content within? When I see a fic that talks about polycules or sets up multiple couples in the summary, it gets my back up a lot less than "Ann and Roger are going to have the happiest wedding ever, and it's time to follow the Ann and Roger show!! Oh, also Ann's brother is mentioned to be gay and she cut her hair short once so that's lesbian rep right there, let me tag M/M and F/F so The Gays know that Ann exists and supports them. :)" So, singular opinion, but: in the case of polyamorous or multiple varying relationships taking screen time, it's more than okay to tag other categories on along with the 'multi' tag. It's when those relationships don't exist that I take umbrage to the tagging.
yeah, poly is one of the only times i multitag, basically, because 90% of my fics are short single-pairing works, but guy/gal/guy fics are both F/M and M/M in about equal measure, so they get tagged both that and multi. the only other time i can think of that i tagged both was a wedding day fic in a female character’s POV (so F/F, since it’s...her POV on her wedding day) heavily featuring her brother and his boyfriend being obnoxious and PDA (so M/M) so yeah, i may be biased but i think poly or “heavily features multiple pairings” is p much the exact scenario the ability to multitag relationships was made for.
Lapis? You mean the Lapis who chained Jasper down right after they fused? That Lapis? I can't see Lapis subbing for anyone, either. Especially not Jasper.
Sibling gripes to "tagging multi because of background gays": people who tag it gen because sure, dude x and lady y are in a relationship but nobody is fucking so it doesnt count, right? and, on a somewhat more petty note, fics that are technically gen but there are straight shipteases that are accompanied by the author squeeing in the authors note about how they couldnt help but add in some x/y and then "oh, I guess if you squint this could also be dude x/dude z"
Also hey fandom I dont know why there is so much fic of 15 year old girl/28 year old man but I'd like it to stop and also I do know why, its the wierdest fucking case of pair the spares ever
*pours one out for every fic that's been taken down and can't be shared again* I'm pretty sure the D/s origfic isn't on AO3 anymore, and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. Alas.
god, the number of times i've seen "stucky if you squint" and "could be spideypool pre-slash i guess" in avengers fics... THAT'S CANON YOU DINGUS YOU HAVEN'T CHANGED ANYTHING like seriously, steve and bucky being A Little Too Close And It's Weird For Everyone, and peter and wade fight-flirting constantly, are the baseline for writing these friendships in character at all. you don't get to tag them with m/m just because you, like everyone else in the fandom, have noticed that sometimes it gets a lil bit gay.
Making a big deal of a character being a super genius and coming up with perfect solutions to all the galaxy's problems, without giving any hint as to what those problems or solutions actually are. All I can think of is Doctor Selenium. Can't you at least crib something from history or mythology, writer?
Unsettling thing of the day; writer very clearly rewrote his loli fic to fit with the restrictions of a different archive, changing nothing but the listed age digits, and did not say in the notes that that was what he did. I find eighteen-year-olds talking like eight-year-olds to be creepy even in G-rated circumstances. Gaah.
I am learning to read through a certain amount of spelling errors and such. But sometimes a spelling error causes it to be unclear whether it is a human or a giant broccoli that is developing a crush on someone. At this point the issue is hard to ignore.
