I was just going about my business at work and passed a girl in the lobby who had a tiny orange kitten balanced on top of her head. I have no explanation for this.

    budgie not actually a bird

Two female woodpeckers of indeterminate species* have been running up and down the trees outside my window. A+ woodworkers, for all their erratic hours.

I was at a park a couple of days ago, and saw a robin taking a bath in a rain-filled pothole. I wish I'd thought to record it.

  10. Wingyl

    Wingyl Allegedly Magic

there is a fantail that keeps coming into the house and refusing to leave

it's not that it's too dumb to leave like with most wild birds. it knows exactly where the doors etc are and how to tell if it can fly through a window or not.

it just likes hanging out inside. clinging to the rafters, picking insects off the cieling, beeping.

TheOwlet A feathered pillow filled with salt and science

There's a blackbird Nest just above the breakroom Windows, and today the three little ones climbed out of the Nest and flapped around the ground! Entire lab (including boss) was watching

And later armed with walnuts because one of the local crows was trying to come for the babies. But the parents held it off on their own and we didn't need to intervene

A FUCKING TAWNY OWL TOOK A MOUSE OFF OUR BIRDFEEDER WHEN I WAS IN THE KITCHEN YESTERDAY

I have literally NEVER seen any wild owl when it was light enough to see her feather colour (about 6pm last night). We hear the 'twitwoo' call a lot at night, so we know there's a mated pair around, but this is my first actual sighting in like a decade and I'm trying really hard not to take it as some kind of message or omen lol

I saw something FLUMPH on the bird-table-basket thing out of the corner of my eye, and thought it was a jay messing around or a woopigeon, and then I saw her sitting splayed in it with her wings mantled. Did you know that tawny owls are the kind with souless black demon eyes? I did, but somehow it's a LOT more unnerving to have a wild predator literally staring you down for the longest fucking minute.

As soon as I moved for my phone, she took off, and she was close enough that I could see the blood on the little body clutched in one talon.

I mean, HOLY SHIT. I think my heart stopped when I saw her. HOLY SHIT.

    TwoBrokenMirrors onion hydration

SO i went to the Devon County Show today, which is a big regional agricultural show at its core
the result is this Google Photos album of 394 photographs, of which i think 391 are of various animals (sheep, cows, pigeons, chickens, pigs, guinea pigs, rabbits, a couple of donkeys from the donkey sanctuary, some angora goats, and some people riding horses sidesaddle) (the other three are of amusing fake grass covered statues)
i hope it provides pleasant viewing for anyone bold enough to venture in
