Or the good old 'By Jove!'. Which isn't quite Zeus, but... eh, close enough. (though that was actually more Victorian, I think?)
'Besides, when you hit your thumb with an eight-pound hammer it's nice to be able to blaspheme. It takes a very special and strong-minded kind of atheist to jump up and down with their hand clasped under their other armpit and shout, "Oh, random-fluctuations-in-the-space-time-continuum!" or "Aaargh, primitive-and-outmoded-concept on a crutch!"' Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms
@Lizardlicks in RPs I've used stuff like "by the Condesce's heavenly rumblespheres" and "haunted Handmaid" shit like "Demoness' blood!" is fun too ngl
i'm hoping i can get away with not having casimir swear by gods at all; since he's pretty foul-mouthed, i've got lots of other options. i think where most people would say "jesus!" or "oh my god!" he says "son of a bitch" or "well, balls" or just "fuck."
ugh, this fic which i was mostly enjoying -- despite every single chapter being spoiled in the author's notes, and the utter woobiefication of loki -- made coulson a hydra agent, and he's utterly ooc. i could roll with it if it was like an au thing, but they explicitly state in the spoilery AN that it's because coulson's actions in canon are 'horrific' and he's definitely a bad guy. i probably should've been adequately warned by the way they started out by having odin murdered by frigga, and absolutely no one mourns, loki's not conflicted, just relieved, thor has not had one second of screen time yet, the warriors three are scum, and basically everyone who was ever mean to loki is dead or scorned and the universe is super ok with that. look, i like a redemption fic as much as anyone, probably more than most. and i agree that the reveal about how loki was forced to do the invasion by thanos, and did a shitty job of it so he'd be stopped, is not as retconnish as some folks say and actually makes pretty good sense. but this is just blatant stannery. i'm only halfway through, and i kind of do want to know how loki singlehandedly defeats hydra, because that's obviously what's going to happen. but i'm getting real tired of the setting itself acting like an ooc author-insert.
I'm familiar with the author, and yeah...it's basically a combination of idfic on steroids and spite fic directed at the entirety of the MCU. Their older work is more nuanced.
there seems to be a consensus in avengers fandom that putting steve in a cabin in the woods for a bit after he woke up was either galaxy brain stupid, or a deliberate hydra plot to destabilize him. but i know if i woke up 70 years in the future, i'd want a month or two to accustom myself to the idea and read up on what i'd missed before i got thrown in at the deep end. i don't think millennials have any real grasp of what pre-internet reality even was. or how much things didn't change, glow, make noise, mean multiple things, refer to other things, go fast, fly, 'connect', need updating, or do stuff suddenly without visible cause, even as recently as the mid 80's. i was born in 1972 and i still get future shock and overload from things like autoplaying video. you wanna take someone who grew up with a telephone being something there was one of for an entire apartment building, and toss him into the middle of goddamn new york to see if he swims? that would be galaxy brain stupid. give him a while to play with a smartphone and get used to having zippers on his pants, goddamn.
very small petty gripe: a published writer i really like, really likes this one fanfic writer's harry potter fic, and i went and tried it very eagerly and i don't like it at all. i don't agree with the characterization, the writing style is kind of flat, the romance plots are pretty much exclusively het with a hell of a lot of 'boy and girl are in true love at fourteen!' rushing to get everyone paired up before sixth year, the actual language used by the british characters is inconsistent and at times pretty inappropriate for ages and backgrounds.... and there's a crap ton of typos. it feels petty to gripe about it but im pretty disappointed.
If it's an older fic might be a case of one of those viewed through 14 year old self's nostalgia goggles type situation?
From personal experience, I feel pretty confident guessing that nobody will notice unless you purposefully draw their attention to it. I will use all kinds of foul language early and often, but I won’t invoke God unless I’m distressed in a way where I would like some godly support or attention. I avoided religious language in a prickly atheist environment literally for years and nobody ever called me out on it, even already knowing I was religious and therefore having at least some reason to look for it. If you say fuck enough, people don’t tend to notice that you didn’t mention Jesus.
i don't know if i want to draw attention to it. i might. there's also the possibility he might sometimes swear by his ancestral gods, even though they're local to the little patch of seaside taiga where he grew up. he wouldn't swear by the pantheon, though, because they're Not His Gods and also assholes, and he wouldn't swear by the elk god because that would be like swearing by entropy. like, it doesn't care, it's seldom applicable, and it's a bit depressing to bring up. (me too re the being quietly religious and just not using god as a swear, though it depends on how serious i'm being. i do it sometimes when i'm joking around or being dramatic, but not when i'm legit negative usually.)
My aunt, a very sweet person who gets amazing mileage out of slyly playing up the bubbly blonde image, will look you dead in the face with huge eyes, and with great emotion say, “O... M... God!” It cracks me the hell up. She gets to say exactly what she meant and also have fun with how much effort you can put into finding ways to avoid saying anything you’d rather not while still remaining utterly transparent. Saying something even more offensive instead of something tamer seems to avoid this problem. Her meta commentary solution is funnier though.
i just saw a long and bad meta on how [x] ship was definitely not problematic which straight up stated that middle-schoolers are incapable of being abusive i... i'm just. look. i get it. you want people to stop ragging on your ship. this is not the way to achieve that outcome. decouple people's actions from their identities 2k19
committing the cardinal sin of double posting because this post is pleasingly pithy and i didn't want to add any more directly to it: anyone noticing that recent anti-anti stuff seems less.... "yes this ship is bad that's Why We Like It" and more "through a mobius double reacharound of logic this ship is Not Bad Actually"? it kinda sucks. i don't like unhealthy ships for the most part, but i'd rather read something that outright acknowledges something is Fucked Up And Enjoyable Because Of That Fuckedupness, rather than... "this unhealthy ship was actually healthy the whole time! surprise! please leave us alone now" (this could just be confirmation bias on my part; my sample is utterly lacking in rigor.)
Yeah, I've noticed that a lot too. "[x] isn't a bad ship, it's a good ship, and that's why I'm not a bad person for shipping it!!!" Which generally makes me trust the person saying it less, for the same reasons why I don't trust authors who angrily proclaim that the abusive childhoods their characters have are Just How People Grow Up. Especially when it gets to things as blatant as 'actively was torturing other member of the ship for a period of time'; that's... that's just an unhealthy ship at that point. It's fine for it to be unhealthy. Roll in the fucked up nature of it. Stop trying to justify brutally torturing someone as Just How Love Is.
I love me some unhealthy ships. If I loved real dysfunctional relationships, that might be an actual problem that I would need to work on, at least if I wanted to keep having relationships with other people. As it is, I’m just confused about which office I’m supposed to report to so I can file my sarcastic apology for porning wrong and upsetting people by porning so incorrectly. I just wanna get this over with so I can get back to enthusiastically being wrong.
I've occasionally seen that thread through anti-related arguments (on multiple sides, but especially as a go-to for antis who have a ship that's not party line) for a long time. It's always been skeevy as hell.
