    names are hard

my usual method is to name my OCs just...something setting appropriate and don't go for meaning. Which is how I ended up with 'Necromancer Overlord of London And Chosen Of The Ruler of Helheim: Matthias/Matt'

oh yeah i went to a furry con yesterday

my friend works at the hotel where it was being held, and i offered to give him a ride home so i could come check it out. i expected to be there for 15 minutes maybe but then we got in a conversation with a dragon and a raptor and ended up spending 3 hours hanging out. i already knew furries were cool but i did not anticipate having that much fun sitting on the floor chatting with strangers

iii don't think I have an official one yet because a lot of it just got slapped down in the spr, but I realize that asking anyone to browse for that is just unfair so I should. Probably get around to his base points. There's some temporal (and spatial, lol) fogginess, since he's gotten adapted into different canons/settings over the years I've had him for like 15 years now oh god but

I should get around to that.

the clone wars is a good show made even better by the fact that you know how horrible the ending will be for every character the entire time you’re watching

after the show everyone either dies or loses (or kills :D) all the people they care about most and spends decades in grief and isolation! it’s great!!! it’s a kids show full of kid show tropes about heroism and nobility and the good guys always coming out on top (though it does get more complex, especially towards the end) and then mid-episode you remember that fucking Revenge of the Sith is up next and everything is about to go absolutely to hell, and has actually been in hell this whole time!! i fucking love it!!!!!

god damn i love clone troopers

their entire species/culture is one huge tragedy in the best and worst way and i am LIVING for it

the ones we get to know are so complicated and loyal and brave and good, each in their own way, and they try so hard to fix things and do what’s right, and not only do they fail, and all of that personality and caring and effort gets wiped away, but palpatine destroys it casually without even taking into consideration the fact that he might be destroying something anyone might consider valuable

everything they are is completely gone, and more or less forgotten in less than twenty years. you watch all their character arcs in The Clone Wars knowing that in just a couple of decades, it’ll be like they didn’t even exist as individuals. the sheer magnitude of the futility and wasted effort and lives snuffed out and in the end no one even remembers them or would care if they did (i haven’t watched Rebels yet so i don’t know if that’s completely true, but in the long run i’m pretty sure it is)

it’s absolutely the best soul destroying tragic shit i could ask for

now i’m going to go back to scouring ao3 for every good clone centric fixit fic i can find

I think what I want out of Kylo Ren's character arc has changed. I used to be hoping for a redemption arc, and I wouldn't be disappointed if we got one, but what I think I really want is for him to finally come into his own as a villain that we can take seriously.

Since he split with Luke and the new Jedi order, Ben has been trying to achieve the state of rock bottom that Anakin spent 20 years in. He thinks that being a Sith means you have to be in a state of constant pain and turmoil because that's what Snoke made him believe, to make him easier to control. So many times you see him hurt himself, physically or emotionally, to make himself stronger - his emotional climax in TFA was an act of profound self-harm. You also see him thumping himself where Chewbacca shot him in the final battle when he feels he needs more strength to win. To him, suffering = power. I think his famous tantrums are also a reflection of this attitude. They aren't an emotional outlet - rather, he's trying to whip his emotions into an even greater frenzy. His mind is a hurricane of torment throughout the first movie, but not as much of one as he feels it needs to be for him to be truly strong and achieve his goals. Snoke encourages this line of thinking by (among many other things) calling him Kylo Ren instead of giving him a Sith title which would validate him as an apprentice.

None of the most powerful Dark Side users we encounter in the series - Sidious, Dooku, Snoke - act according to this mindset. They draw strength from and, when appropriate, give vent to their negative emotions without giving those emotions an ounce of control over them. (As an aside, Sidious and Snoke are both terrible teachers in the same way. They actively encouraged weakness in their students to make them easier to manipulate when the whole point of using the Dark Side is supposed to be strength! I know their real goal was to have a powerful puppet, not a successor, but they're betraying the philosophy they claim to live by >:/ Dooku seems to be better with Asajj Ventress. He never gives her a Sith name and he isn't exactly the greatest teacher, but at least he seems to be somewhat invested in her actual improvement.)

Anyway, the point is that by the end of TLJ we see Kylo Ren start to take steps towards this colder, more controlled way of thinking. I want him to get all the way there. It would involve throwing off the abuse of his old master just as much as a redemption arc would! Except in this version, he would finally get what he's wanted since he was a child - control over himself and his life, and power besides - and he'd be pursuing galactic domination, which he explicitly named as his goal in TLJ. Anakin was a slave who killed his master. Let's have a puppet who kills his puppeteer, then learns to do his job, but better!

This whole time he's been a confused, hurting kid throwing temper tantrums, nothing like Main Villain material. He's going to throw that off one way or another, so why not let him become a real competent scary bastard, who you can be afraid of for what he might decide to do rather than his chaotic lashing out? I want to see him learn how to be the worst. It's not the only character arc I'd be happy with, but it sure would be an interesting one if done correctly.

(If Sidious is in TROS I hope he doesn't take that slot. Let someone else have a turn, Palpatine!)

And now he's got Hux as his immediate underling - Hux, his former rival who's never respected or even really feared him, who's just as pathetic in his own way as Ren always has been. I've never been into that ship but their dynamic could get very interesting in the next movie. I hope the writers are good and not bad.
