Hi, I'm Em. I'm a kinda nervous genderfluid bookworm biology major and seebs anon. I love reading (especially mysteries), mythology, candles, make up, and baking. I apologize near constantly and probably should make a apology jar at this point. My favorite animals are cats and mice. I have a pet mouse named Arthur Conan Doyle, Artie for short, who is the cutest little thing ever. I have so many pictures of him it's ridiculous. I have some brain issues, but I don't actually know what they are and am unlikely to get to a therapy type person anytime soon. I'm really more of a they than anything else, so yeah. I have a tumblr, but freaked out and stopped using it when I felt embarrassed, which is the sort of thing happens a lot with me. Hopefully this will be the first internet thing other than my email that I'll keep up with. I'm not really certain if they count as 'fandoms', since I'm too shy to ever get involved, but my favorite books/ book series are Sherlock Holmes, pretty much any of Agatha Christie's mysteries but especially the Tommy and Tuppence stuff, Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers (I like everything I've read from her, but that particular book is my favorite), John Dies at the End, and the Dresden Files. I'm perpetually disappointed that the only person I know who's read the Dresden Files is the resident creepy dude. I really like Homestuck and Kagerou for webcomics. I used to read Hanna is Not a Boy's Name, but, well, yeah. I also used to read one called No Rest for the Wicked, but it went on hiatus and then I never picked it back up. If make up and nail polish count as fandoms, then that is totally a fandom I'm in. Sorry if this is written wrong or anything.
I keep meaning to get back into the Dresden files. I got five books in, decided it wasn't for me, and ended up reading Simon R. Green's Nightside books instead. Same genre, London setting. Makeup is powerful and intimidating. Kudos for mastering the beast.
They have their problems, but I prefer them overall. I found Harry to be a bit too overpowered in the books. I prefer my protagonists to be thoroughly outclassed by their opponents.
I'll try to find them. For me, I sorta read the Dresden Files to see how ridiculous everything can get. Some of the newer ones are flat out depressing and that's not what I'm reading them dang it!
I've read the first couple of Dresden Files books. Sorta liked the broad strokes of the worldbuilding, but then Fool Moon had to have FIVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF WEREWOLF and goodness sake. Wandered over to Seanan McGuire's Incryptid series, which is similarly 'investigate supernatural murder while on the run from scary establishment' but ridiculously cheerful, and haven't made it back yet. I really like Butcher's Codex Alera series, though. And god, yes, hinabn. :| I swear, I watched that deviantart for two years before giving up.
The first few books are eh, and then they get better, and then they get depressing. I think I may look that series up. I haven't read it, actually. D: Same here
Huh. I'll have to try again! I do like his writing. Briefly, the premise is "cryptids are real, by which we mean pretty much any mythological creature you can think of; the protagonists try to protect them from the Well-Intentioned Extremists that want to kill all non-humans and also solve crimes". It doesn't take itself terribly seriously; the protagonist of the first couple books is basically Dazzler (from the X-Men), and there's a very comic-book vibe about a lot of it. I really like McGuire's work a lot; she's one of the few authors I trust not to have creepy subtext.
First one is "Discount Armageddon". :D She's reasonably popular, so books shouldn't be too difficult to find.
if you like mythology and mysteries, you might like the obsidian and blood series by aliette de bodard. it's set in the aztec empire, magic/gods/magical creatures are real, and the main character is the high priest of the dead and one of several people responsible for keeping cosmic balance. it starts with 'servant of the underworld', and they're available as ebooks.
Ooo, I have to grab that. I read her "The Waiting Stars" last year, but haven't gotten around to the rest of her works; that sounds like my jam.
DRESDEN FILES *flails* have no fear i am here as a fellow fan. tho i haven't read the last two books :( i love those books so much. also sherlock holmes that's amazing that you have a mouse named that. and john dies at the end is best. need to read tommy and tuppence.
YAY! More fans! I got the most recent book awhile back and stayed up all night reading it. Have you read the John Dies at the End sequel? I haven't yet, really need to get around to that. Tommy and Tuppence are so great. My first two mice were actually named after them!
