@Kaylotta that trees pattern is so stunning. If I had the time...(*slaps wrist* No!) Relatedly: an old lady in a haberdashery once told me that the correct way to cross-stitch is to use as many needles as you have colours, and stitch every complete row in turn. It keeps it neater, and probably stops the fabric pulling, but I've never had the patience to keep track of the needles (and my most recent patterns have used like 20-30 colours, so). I've only finished one (fake edit: two!) freehand embroidery project, which I've now lost :'( I got better at it during the project, but it is kind of frustrating to go from neat, regimented cross-stitch to the shambles that is baby's first satin stitch. I was proud of that project, though, so if I find a pic I'll post it. My recent cross-stitch projects I've posted in Craft Nerd Herd, but as an example of what can be done with the pic-to-pattern software: Fake edit: I just found this, which I'd forgotten I made. Well, I can't freehand very well, but replicating pixel art is definitely the thing I do! Like, literally, my much neglected current project is an FFX pixel art. And yeah, you don't technically NEED cross stitch fabric but it sure helps in keeping things regular.

Working on this now, about a third of the way done. :D @roach Yeah, it's satisfying and peaceful to have everything even, to know that you've done it Perfectly, while freehand embroidery is always a matter of skill and practice. I like both but cross stitch is definitely easier, imo. And you can get super pretty kits, so it's just Following Directions, with no creativity or thought required, which is very soothing.

Yeah. :D First cabling and first colorwork project; I got lots of help with starting it, but it's actually not too hard! And oh, man, that's awesome! I think you'll probably want to start in the middle, so you can make sure everything's centered, but it's totally doable.
I don't think that would be too bad if you stitch out a rough grid of 10 x 10 blocks with plain regular thread before starting, and are careful to check your counts as you go! It's ambitious but that's what makes things fun :D Also, like they said, easy stuff is boring and we dare you (though that picture albedo posted is pretty awesome and I'm actually kind of tempted to throw that together). And aaah, people are sharing, let me see if I have any pictures of my stuff saved that I can post.

I've got an armwarmer tube, a lap blanket in enormously bulky yarn, and the beginning of a pi shawl in fingering weight. :D
Badass! That's super ambitious; this scarf is my second project, so I'm still figuring out what I'm doing. :D
With sets like that, you usually receive a pretty random mix of colours. It won't necessarily resemble as the pics. I'd say go for the cheap one and get any missing colours separately later.
