i’m very tempted to write a fic in which my oc casimir transfers in fom durmstrang and just... does whatever he feels like. and doesn’t give a fuck about harry or voldemort or anything. he keeps stumbling into harrys plot moments and being like “hi, ignore me, i’m just looking for a funny place to hide malfoy’s shoes”

bc of course he sorts slytherin and of course he terrorizes his housemates

(i had a dream about this situation the other night; the punchline was when he got caught stealing the dementors)

I do love me some fridge horror and tvtropes-style deconstruction, as in, if we take this dead seriously and ride that out to its natural conclusion, what kind of bizarre dystopia nightmare do we get? I honestly can't understate how much I love that.

But a huge part of my enjoyment is the novelty of the ideas and the disorientation of an unfamiliar perspective. That's why Watchmen (the book, not the movie) hit me so hard, and why I love it so much for doing that, and why nothing else can be Watchmen to satisfying effect. It had something to say, and now it's been said. It's not that I'm not interested in hearing more of that discussion, but it's gotta have something significant and new to add if that's its goal.

I feel like a lot of these Dumbledore stories are probably indeed cathartic to the authors, but most of them are not going to be very interesting to me by this point. I've already been through that line of thought. I'm gonna need something more as a reader. It doesn't have to be a complete departure. It could be a particularly close study of how that take on Dumbledore is affecting a specific character's understanding of who they are given various uprooted assumptions about what it means to be a wizard, for instance, and if that brings new ideas and a different perspective to the table, then hell yeah, we're back in business.

If someone gets a lot of personal satisfaction from writing a particular character doing a straightforward version of that confrontation which has been written many times before, more power to them, seriously. But I'm probably not going to get much out of it as a reader.

Thank you! It was a really interesting idea you brought up, and your and @LadyNighteyes’ thoughts set off an entire train of ideas. It may have come in the form of meta, but you guys were the people at the table with the new perspective, and that’s awesome.

Yeah, exactly. Harry Potter is extremely ripe for having holes picked in its worldbuilding and narrative for a variety of complicated reasons related to its structure, tonal shifts, and writing style, but when everyone's just standing around and repeating how terrible Dumbledore is for the exact same reasons, it doesn't feel much more substantial than when I was 8 and sitting around at summer day camp with the only other person my age who'd read them and whenever the conversation ran down we'd try to restart it by going "Isn't Malfoy a jerk?"

I'd potentially be up for HP fic that finds new holes to pick or new ways to pick at them, but "somebody kicks Evil Strawman Dumbledore #1728's ass" often feels more like flailing one's fists at the source material and less like taking a scalpel to it, and there's so much of it I just don't bother looking for the exceptions. I just don't care that much.

you know what i’d love to see? someone brings in their other fandoms heavy hitters, and it doesn’t work. like bucky barnes snipes voldy in the head and voldy gets back up.

Yeah, exactly! If we're using TVtropes terms, there's a lot of room to go for the decon/recon switch. HP has a lot of logical problems, but the squishy magic system and worldbuilding also gives you a lot of avenues to address those problems besides "everyone in the story is an incompetent idiot." "Someone attempts to break HP canon with logic, HP world fights back with its own logic" is a story I'm honestly surprised doesn't seem to be done much, because it's always seemed like a very logical extension of the plot hole nitpick genre.

Oblique but thorough spoilers for Wolverine: Origins (2006), the comic, not any movie. I forget if there’s a movie by this name. It’s all very confusing.

And then Harry has to hire Deadpool and Bucky so Bucky can snipe him in the head again but with better bullets and they can store his unconscious body in..... I dunno, a vault in Gringotts?

non-drinkers, i’m sorry to have to inform you that if your characters* are drunk enough to not remember in the morning, they’re too drunk to participate actively in sex at all. they might manage to grope a bit and maybe not throw up. they are not going to be uo for three mindblowingly good fucks and getting married in vegas before they pass out or sober up.

*if the characters are gods, supersoldiers, etc., all bets are off. they might give birth to a horse. no one can say anything.

I know someone who, for reasons related to this gripe, was contemplating writing Yuri on Ice fic about the infamous backstory banquet party in which the participants go to a hotel room with plans to boink and just end up drunkenly crying about how good dogs are.

now, the YoI blackout i kinda believe, if he remembers he partied too hard but doesn’t remember specifically macking on viktor. you don’t lose the whole night if you’re capable of like, pole dancing. but it can be real spotty.

i had plenty of nights in my rebellious youth when someone had to tell me what i did and i was like “yeah that sounds like me”. but i knew i’d been partying, recalled the general tone of things (whether i got in fights or got laid) and didn’t do much moving around after i stopped drinking. like i apparently gave a pretty adequate blow job a couple times, one of which i don’t remember initiating sex, though i do remember asking to see his guitar with the intention of getting him alone so i could ask.

waking up with your crush and going “oh god did i actually act on that impulse” makes sense, though it’s kind of a tired trope.

waking up with your coworker in a different hotel, to discover you had hours of amazing sex and then went to a chapel and got married, and don’t remember any of it... that broke my suspension of disbelief.

drunk sex is kind of floppy and slobbery. there’s a high probability of whiskey dick. fic should recognize that more often, is all.

Most of the writers haves probably never actually had an alcoholic beverage let alone got that drunk. I know my limit is, "just far enough to be solidly tipsy, but no further," because after that point it stops being fun for me.

My understanding is that it was a temporary one someone had brought in. Those are a thing, apparently, although I think you need to be more careful with swinging on them since they're not braced properly like a permanently-installed one would be.

My internal reaction is also "oh, that was JJ's fault" although I don't know why I'm instinctively blaming it on JJ.
