okay is it cool to like. call a place to ask for a general price for an eye exam.

I really really don't want to go with that stupid america's best thing, because i don't want to be stuck with their glasses. and a lot of the places are in upper Delaware. i'm looking at a group by the beach but. no one lists general prices and i want to scream

also the place that's nearby in milford apparently is a horrible company that a lot of people have had trouble with and i'm just. not tempting it.

I'd say that if they get mad at asking for an estimate, that's a solid indication that it's a place you wouldn't want to go anyway.

It's solid to ask, and it's also solid to get an exam somewhere, get your prescription including pupillary distance, and buy your glasses online. (I got mine done in Newark, but that's northern delaware and also I have insurance, so not necessarily useful. my roommate got hers done at walmart)

yeah. finally found a place that seems decent! and that's the plan actually, gonna go look at the usually rec'd glasses sites. (sadly, gotta head up to dover to do so, but that's the price i pay for not wanting to wait til october with broken glasses)

I'm sad I saw this late, but I work at an optometrist office and that's a really normal thing people call to ask about, no worries!

(also america's best is terrible, we see so many people for a second opinion after their first rx was botched) I personally buy glasses at eyebuydirect and they turned out good. the only thing with buying glasses online is that if you need bifocals or prism glasses, it's really tricky to get right without someone being able to measure them on your face

yeah, thankfully i was looking at reviews and shit bc I don't really trust those places, it was kinda a last resort thing offered up but yikes at some of those poor folk's experience. and good! i'll remember that if i find this local group isn't for me, and look thorugh both of the site's i've been rec'd and once i get the perscription, order a pair. Thank you for the info everyone!

Has anyone had any experience going shampoo-free, and if so, how did it go?

well, i'm currently conducting an experiment with using dish soap instead. but if you mean simply using water, i and a lot of other people have conducted that experiment involuntarily by being homeless, and i'm just gonna say there's a reason a lot of gutterpunks have dreads or spiked hair. i think with a lot of brushing it might be ok, or if you keep your hair quite short. but it'll feel and look kind of oily even so.

i have not tried using vinegar or any of the other non-detergent stuff people use. some of that might work pretty good. but i think the truth is that human hair is naturally oily, and if you don't like that, you need to remove the oil in some manner. absorb it with powder or use some grease-cutting substance.

I've heard good things about rye flour, I'll give that a go.

I have a friend who went shampoo free, and her hair looks fantastic? It's super curly and shampoo made it kinda dry and frizzy, but now it looks downright luxurious.

I'm not shampoo free, but I don't wash my hair very often. It's extremely long and I don't usually comb it at all except with my fingers. I wanna say that barring situations in which I get excessively sweaty or get something in my hair, I can go at least a week and a half before it starts actually looking oily, then I can get a couple more days by wearing it up, and lots of more days by rinsing it with hot water when I shower. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have suddenly gone from washing it every few days to this without a horrible grease disaster, but it seems to adjust over time?

i'm sure there are a lot of variables. my hair is naturally very oily, has a smooth cuticle, and is completely straight. so when i don't remove the oil, it's really really obvious.

My hair's very thick and very oily. Might have to try a few different ways.

I tried doing conditioner-only for a while, and my hair was nice and soft and shiny - I only stopped because it meant I needed to "wash" my hair twice a week instead of once, and my hair takes forever to dry, so it wasn't worth it.

I already wash my hair at least every other day or it feels gross. Tried doing water-only last night, and it feels a little weird now but not nearly as gross as it would if I hadn't washed it at all.

I would also recommend cutting waaay down on how often you wash, because that´s a self perpetuating cycle. leave it completely alone or go water only for a week (Headscarves will be your friend) and when you then wash it it will stay nice much longer. The process sucks a bit (I´ve only done it on accident bc depression) but it helps your scalp chill out on producing so much oil because you´re not stripping it of oil all the time.

Yeah, that was why I wanted to try it. I knew it was self-perpetuating but it felt so gross not to. Water-only seems to be okay, so I'll try that for a while.

Experiment's not going to work - I made it two days before I had to shampoo again because it felt so gross I couldn't sleep. I'll try shampooing every other day for a bit instead, see if that works.
