i wish people who posted their fanart on ao3 (VALID) would use a tag to let me know that the thing i am about to open is a picture and not a story because i do not in fact check the wordcount every time i click something. Especially not in a fandom where i am starving for content anyways

Isn't that against the rules? Like, a lot? Presumably, they don't tag it because they'd get caught.

iirc no, the Archive doesn't just take fanfic; they certainly also take meta and have no reason to not take fanart?

People also post vids, or at least links to them, and I love those so I really hope they’re allowed! I do really very much appreciate a tag though, both so I can find them and so I can not find them when I’m not in the mood.

AO3’s art display methods on mobile when mixed with writing are my one real sadness about the site. I very much appreciate people who include header art, or art of particular scenes, or whose art is integral to the story. But it makes the post too wide for the screen always, and I hate having to swipe exactly vertical to avoid drifting off to the side where there is no text.

Fanart is 100% allowed, and the FAQs even give suggestions for external image hosts to use. The AO3 rules I've heard about the most people violating are 1) not tagging the major warnings or using CNTW, 2) including direct links to places people can give you money (because OTW could lose their nonprofit status if people are using their services to make money), and 3) using an AO3 work as, like, your blog or something like that that they regard as "non-fannish." Fanart, fanvids, meta and analysis, and original works are all fine.

dear modern fantasy writers: stop throwing evil artifacts in volcanoes. they’re not that hot. and airfare to hawaii is expensive. use a steel foundry. if that’s not hot enough, use lasers.

Honestly, I feel like "throw it in a volcano" isn't intended to melt it so much as to stick it somewhere where it's definitively inaccessible to anyone who would try and use it?

But if you're doing modern fantasy, then if you can throw it in a volcano, you can put it on a rocket and sent it into the sun too.

Depends very much on the specific occurrence. I suspect a lot of people are just copying LotR, and that one didn't have anything to do with volcanoes being super-especially good at destroying things, it was that the Ring was magically impervious to harm unless returned to the fires it was forged in.

Eh. That's a lot harder, actually. Volcanos are everywhere, to send it into the sun you'd need a pretty damn big rocket and heavy gravity assisting.

hyrax we'll ride 'till the planets collide

it's much cheaper to get a plane ticket to hawaii than to launch something into space. cheaper still to get to the local steel foundry, as Jesse suggested.

...actually if we're going with lotr logic of "destroyed where it was created" then it probably would be going to a foundry anyway!

... actually i was thinking about an evil weapon there. but if it was an evil gold ring what if you literally had to go find the evil wizard's blowtorch in order to destroy it. we must journey to the back of the evil lair and break into the evil shed,

it was a harry dresden fic, they were talking about destroying the denarians' coins. apparently harry already tried in canon with ordinary force, which is why marcone offered to fly him to hawaii so he could toss it in a tourist trap. obvs the actual material of the coins isn't relevant, because you can melt silver in your wood burning stove. by accident. and get in a lot of trouble. ask me how i know. anyway, in the fic marcone brought up mount doom, and then it was assumed that a volcano would melt anything. but really, they're only like 2000 degrees F at the surface. and flowing lava downstream of the volcano is even cooler. there are a lot of industrial options for getting much, much hotter than that right in chicago, some of which you can rent for a very reasonable price.

or if you're determined to go on a demonic artifact destruction honeymoon, go to the california desert and let marcone's money get you access to the molten salt tank at one of those mirror-field solar farms. shit, i've got to use that idea myself, now that i've had it. sunlight plus salt? that is some serious anti-demon oomph!

ok i just did some googling and found that the molten salt in those solar farms isn't as hot as i thought, and wouldn't melt normal silver, let alone demon reinforced silver. his best option is just to take a glassblowing class at the community college and toss the coins in the fining furnace.

I am not Jim Butcher, but I'm pretty sure tossing a Blackened Denarius in a volcano would be a recipe for exactly the kind of "it got so much more incredibly worse than I ever could have imagined" that his plotting thrives on.

Or at least for a grumpy Nicodemus poking around in lava until the coin bubbles back up (which I'm sure it would do, because that's the kind of Artifact of Doom it is), which would admittedly be kind of hilarious.
