Bah. I'm most drawn to Papyrus for actual playing. I'm gonna keep poking at him to see if I can get a coherent sense of him, and ramble a bit in the Undertale thread when I'm closer to see if I missed anything big.
Hey, @Void, are you just busy with other stuff, or are you stuck? I can edit if my last post isn't working for some reason.
I'm feeling pretty good about Papyrus so far in the rave thread. :D One thing is bugging me; the question of the talking flower, and which of Papyrus' ideas were actually his own. Spoiler: oh my god why did it duplicate itself is it gone yet When you go to Grillby's with Sans, he asks you if you know anything about a talking flower. He plays it off like he's just talking about the echo flowers (because those are the only ones he knows about)... but he follows it up with how, "a few days ago," Papyrus mentioned a flower was talking to him. Telling him flattery, suggestions, and predictions. You have this date just after entering Waterfall. So Papyrus told him that a few days before you reach Waterfall, likely a few days before you met Sans or even fell into the underworld. Papyrus had been hearing from Flowey for a while. There's one point where it's 100% certain Flowey told Papyrus something: toward the end of a true pacifist run, Papyrus brags that he knew to call everyone because a little flower told him. Other than that? It's not 100% clear. But there's another point where I'm like 95% sure Flowey gave Papyrus the idea: when you properly befriend Alphys. The Game Grumps playthrough just got through the normal pacifist ending, so I got to rewatch (a) the phone call where you spare everyone on a first playthrough, and (b) Flowey's advice for a getting a true pacifist ending. Things I noticed: Alphys doesn't disappear into the depths of her lab in a normal pacifist run. She's working on new science, with Undyne as a lab assistant. Undyne noticed that Alphys seems sad, but doesn't know why: Alphys didn't come clean about the old experiments or the amalgymates or anything. Flowey advises you to be better friends with Alphys after you reload the game, and only on a reload does Undyne ask you to deliver a letter. You go on that date with Alphys, and it ends with Alphys confessing to her less shameful lies (like about anime) to Undyne... and Undyne deciding to help Alphys feel better about herself, by getting Papyrus to run her through positivity training. The training ends abruptly. And Papyrus calls you about it, to encourage you to go meet up with Alphys at her lab. His whole demeanor on that call is very strange for him. He starts it off with "Howdy, if it isn't my good friend, who trusts me." HOWDY??? From Papyrus??? Through the call he's being vague (normally he's very precise about weird details), and every other shot he's sweating nervously. It's not quite like when he nervously tried to balance his friendships between you and Undyne, asking what you were wearing; at that point, he was a little more obvious, even saying WINK WINK at the end of the call. And when he's trying to trick people, like when he tricked Undyne with his "I THOUGHT YOU WERE UP TO THE CHALLENGE" goading, he's still more obvious about his intentions. This phone call sounds like he's being spoonfed instructions by Flowey. Not to mention, from what I remember, it's only in the path to the True Labs that you can see the note in Alphys' trash that says "I know what you did" in strange handwriting, which implies to me that yeah, Flowey pushed her buttons on this path but not the normal pacifist path. I'm struggling to think of any other time where I'm suspicious of why Papyrus did a thing, but then it's like 1:20am and I should go to sleep. I think Flowey encouraged Papyrus' sense of entitlement (ALL THE THINGS I UTTERLY DESERVE!) and desperation to get those achievements, but these were traits Papyrus already had what the heck why is the spoiler tag multiplying this fucking spoiler tag is dog residue what the shit fucking finally. what even was that. it kept insisting on splitting itself after alphys and before the following punctuation
Song for Annie. If you had your gun would you shoot it at the sky? Why? To see where it would fall Oh will you come down at all? If you had your gun would you shoot it at the sky? Why? To see where your bullet would fall Oh will you come down at all?
IMPORTANT QUESTION. We know that Alex fell down into the Underground in 201x. It's implied to have been a while between Alex and Frisk's falling - probably at least 50 years and likely closer to a century at least. So what level of tech do we wanna establish in-game?
Huh. I thought that was a bait-and-switch, that they gave you the time of Frisk's fall but had you name Alex. I agree with you on the minimum time scale between them... I dunno, I kinda feel like calling it 201x was a signal to use the Ambiguous Present. Sort of like how in some fantasy settings thousands of years can go by but the tech level doesn't change.
Sure, but it could be a good chance to up the tech level? And Chara states that 201x is when THEY fell, not Frisk.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the 201X flashback is Chara, and checking the calendar in New Home has the narration say "this is the date I fell" or something... and jt does feel like ambiguous present. It is an alternate universe with similar tech development to ours, but not identical. We know Asriel and Chara died at least long enough ago that most monsters now alive never knew them (Alphys, Undyne, Papyrus, Sans... none of those guys recognized Toriel, but they all knew Asgore.) So at least a few decades.
