Spoiler: Snow Day Steven, you're going to give yourself gray hairs. Literally. Spoiler: Feeling Blue Our Lapis: "they're not nice, like me!" Steven: "Uuuuuuh-"
I am continuing to do a concern about Steven's wellbeing, with his utterly filling his schedule as though to keep from thinking about himself too much, since he almost refuses to take care of himself or let anyone really look out for him without spending a while episode reminding him that they care Spoiler Still weirded out by him calling Greg "father" that one time. Thinking sad thoughts about how vegetarians don't have use for imperfect pork chops OR hot dogs I think the biggest reveals left are to do with what Steven's been repressing - or discovering for the first time - in himself
Spoiler: Snow Day I don't know why this episode made me sad. On the one hand, I could totally understand Steven's frustration that the Gems weren't seeing him as who he actually is...on the other hand...I miss Classic Steven too ;_______; His smile and optimism...gone... (Actually I've been wondering about the use of the term "Classic Steven". My first reaction to Amethyst saying it was like, "rude, don't tell Steven that the 14-year-old version of himself is the 'classic' version. He's got enough complexes without you making him feel like he's 'past his prime' or something." But then, I guess that form isn't really just "14-year-old Steven", is it? Like, one of the key points of "Steven's Birthday" was that he's looked like that since he was eight? ...So, is "Classic Steven" the form he held the longest? Then, when during the timeskip did he take his current form? If it was right after CYM, then he's held this form nearly as long (well, six-to-seven years for Classic Steven and...at least three? for Future Steven; I guess it's not really that close, but it's not that big a difference in length either, IMO). If it was right before the movie, then...what prompted it? Did he just wake up like that one day? I wish we could see Steven age onscreen sometime...I don't understand how this boy's mental sense of his own age works at all. ......For that matter, I don't get how he apparently looked (/mentally felt like) the same age during CYM as he did did when he was eight. I-is that normal?? Did we ever address that??)
Guys i have great news. Minor spoiler ahead. Spoiler We now have a canon nonbinary character in SU besides Steven's fusions! Their name is Shep, theyre nonbinary and the show refers to them as Sadies new partner, and their VA is nonbinary as well!
Spoiler: little graduation i was so happy the second i heard sadie say "they" for shep omg... though i will admit, i am that bitch who is kinda disappointed sadie/lars didn't make it -- like i get it, and it's a good lesson to teach using them, but my shipper heart, it aches
Spoiler: Little Graduation I was also really sad that Larsadie died, but I think I've come around to just being happy for Sadie now. I'm glad that she's found a stable, easy relationship to be in. She's worked so hard for so long already. I just hope we get some opportunity in SUF's limited runtime to see Sadie and Shep being cute together...like, Steven might have been kind of an asshole for saying it, but he's kinda right that it's hard to get emotionally invested in a ship when you haven't seen their "stuck on a deserted island" montage yet.
Does anyone know any good SU AU fics/comics(/other story-based forms of media)? Yesterday I discovered the big White Diamond!Steven comic and had a really good time catching up to it. And I've been following the SU AU Gone Wrong (can't find a link rn, it's the one spudinacup is doing on Tumblr) for a month or so now... And between those two, I see a lot of peripheral content for various other AUs. Like, AUs where Rose is alive and Steven is full-human, or where Steven is the son of Blue or Yellow Diamond, or where Pink Diamond is the head of the Diamond Authority, or where Steven was raised on Homeworld, and so on... ...It's making me feel like there's this rich world of Steven Universe AU content that I'm missing out on. There really are so many avenues to explore...so many places in canon where you can branch out into something different. And it's making me remember that oh yeah, I actually love AUs like that. Remember Homestuck bloodswaps? Those were the best. (I wonder if someone ever did a proper story for that Crystal Gems-swap that used to be popular back in the day. You know, where Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth are the original Crystal Gems, rather than Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst? Or actually, back then, it was Peridot, Lapis, and Jasper? I'd be interested in either, provided that it's possible to keep the characters involved feeling recognizably close to their canon counterparts... I've only seen people do art.)
Theres an ongoing comic on tumblr thats going on Right Now featuring a Peri/Lapi/Bis gemswap AU, i believe its by making-friendos. On that note, im gonna start writing my own AU fic soon (one of my goals for 2020). Starting with "what if Steven found Spinel and brought her to earth during season one?"
Oh man that would throw a lot of things into different patterns. Are you thinking around the time of Warp Tour, earlier, or later? A lot of delightful, painful options there.
Slightly before Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem. She would be his first encounter with a non-corrupted, non-Crystal Gem.
What fucks me up about this is that I have absolutely no idea what the correct play is for Pearl in this situation. Like, what should she say? First of all, what can she say? ...Like, if Spinel walks in, sees Pearl, and says "you're PD's Pearl, what are you doing here", is Pearl actually allowed to say "yes, I was PD's Pearl"? Is it Allowed for her to talk about Pink Diamond and acknowledge her past in that way if she doesn't mention the whole "Pink is Rose" thing? And under what circumstances, besides the events of A Pale Pink Rose, can Pearl's gag order be broken? Like, can Spinel's presence be enough on its own to give her the freedom to Say Things? If Spinel pressures Pearl to talk about her past with Pink, could she talk about...her Entire past, or would she have to stop at some point? And what would happen even if she did talk about her past? Because I can't stop imagining Spinel's entrance going like Spinel: Hi, I was Pink Diamond's best friend, and then she left me in a garden and never came back. Why is that? Garnet: Oh sorry, she got shattered for being evil. If you're her friend you're also probably evil actually Pearl: [loud silence] And I feel like that would be a really awkward atmosphere to drop the "Pink Diamond was Rose Quartz actually" bombshell into. ...That reminds me, I remember wondering about "what if Steven had unbubbled Bismuth back in Season 1". Like, it kind of feels like that could've happened at any random point in the timeline after Steven meets Lion. And it might be a lot less likely to bring down Pink's entire house of cards, but it does introduce the whole "Rose Quartz kept secrets and did some shady things" to Steven earlier. Also like...given how Season 1 Pearl reacted to the revelation that Rose had hidden Lion from her...what is she supposed to do with the knowledge that Rose had hidden Bismuth too.
Thinking about Pearl, which I obviously do constantly, fucks me up just generally. My precious trauma birb. ...I would KILL for some heartbreaking Pearl-Spinel interactions just in general, tbh.
TWO NEW EPS DROPPED GOGOGO Don't have much to say about "In Dreams" except I see what you did there, Sugar. Spoiler: Bismuth Casual Can we just say Pearl is adorable? Outgoing and confident and making new friends, but still... very much Pearl. "If they were enemy gems we'd be friends by now..." I mean, you're not wrong, Steven.
THOSE WERE SO GOOD!!!! Spoiler: spoipers PERIDOT IS MY PRECIOUS CHILD AND I WOULD DIE FOR HER. I probably have other thoughts on In Dreams but I can't think of them right now, just...Peri is a good babey. ;0; Pearl is ADORABLE and I do not blame Bismuth even a little for her crush. The toilet paper for Vandalism (TM)! The fucking MECHANIC JINGLE being her favorite song! She has literally no right to be so cute wtf. ...God, Pearl's character arc is satisfying. She's moving on and making friends both with and without benefits and just genuinely living her best life!! And Bismuth being hesitant to make a move because she doesn't want to ruin what Pearl already has...my heart. ;-; I know I'm Pearlmethyst Trash but thankfully I'm also Multishipper Trash and Pearlsmuth is so cute! (I told my mom about Bismuth's crush--she's seen through Adventures In Light Distortion, plus a handful of others--and she just paused and went "...yeah I could see that," it was very good.) Also Connie continues to be perfect and I love her and am fucking terrified of what's gonna happen next.
Spoiler: in dreams Is the part where characters in a teen romantic drama are suddenly burying bodies a sideways wink at Riverdale? That wasn't exactly a reboot, but kind of a similar deal. Spoiler: bismuth casual Me: Haha, Pearl is so weird and alien, producing rolls of toilet paper from her gem to give to humans because "they all have at least one of these in their house!" Me: *goes to play a small-town-life sim where you befriend NPCs* Me: *finds an item that gives positive +Social from most NPCs, carries a stack of it at all times and gives them away to anyone I want to befriend* Me: ... WAIT A MINUTE
Spoiler: bismuth casual I cannot stop thinking about Pearl's little moment of glee about how humans sometimes use toilet paper for vandalism, and want to know how many times she's offered to go tp a house with her friends
Spoiler Pearl continues to be someone I aspire to be like. Confident, outgoing, having multiple friends within travel distance, In all seriousness, good for her. Not sure how I feel about implied BisPearl, Pearlmethyst is still my OTP. Also, HE WAS A SKATER BOY
Spoiler: Together Forever Garnet with the good advice. Also, that entire last exchange. Spoiler: Growing Pains FINALLY, SOMEONE SAID IT Also "that was just the early stuff!"
