in the author's defense, they're headed to 12 grimmauld place and at this point in the fic harry had not yet been there. also the canon rules on whether or not owls can find places that have been fidelius'd or made unplottable are........fuzzy

also it's really funny to imagine a scrawny 14 year old panicking and trying to hide an owl down his shirt

One of my favourite bits from a cowriter's chapter, describing fun with non-canon family trees:

“My first. I loved him. I did… but he was his son. I couldn’t love all of him.”

Mistress Moonlight leaves her child in the care of nannies, endures her husband’s anger, and leaves for hours at a time, seeking out the company of another man.

“My second son, though… he was his.” Moonlight squeezes shut her eyes. “And I loved every inch of him.”

A few years later. A little boy and a cruel-lipped man stand beside another hospital bed as Mistress Moonlight cradles another child in her arms.

“He was… my special one.”

Moonlight dotes upon one son while the other is kept away. In her eldest’s face, she sees her husband. In her younger child she sees the man with whom she has fallen in love. Mistress Moonlight acts accordingly.

“I wonder, sometimes, if that’s why he… became the way he did. If I made him like that.”

The son of a bad man grows into a good one. The son of a good man becomes crueler with each passing day.
