I have corrected the links, I assumed the autofill was pulling from my clipboard rather then just repeating whatever link I added most recently.
Hilariously, just from snipers, you could have used the chapter that was only 69 words. To quote the author, and a number of comments: Nice
Just saw a fic with what was, on copy-pasting it into Notepad++ to check, 646 words of tags. 32 of those were individual character tags for all their OCs.
How do you not run out of things to tag by word 500. At that point what are you even tagging? Stairs?
Writer, that was neither Vlad Taltos OR Esme fucking Weatherwax, so yeah, I'd say they were pretty fucking OOC. Especially in the case of Esme Weatherwax. A bit of advice: don't write characters you actively hate. It's harder to write them accurately!! Also: Vlad is not particularly reverent to Verra, the Demon Goddess. partly because he's absorbed Dragaeran attitudes but also because Verra has done really ridiculous things to him. He'd agree with Esme's attitudes toward gods. it could have been such a fun crossover too.
I have not read this fic and yet I am immensely offended by it by proxy. Of all the possible things to have Esmerelda "had to be the good one" Weatherwax disagree with Vladimir "well I became a mob boss assassin because I wanted to kill members of the dominant ethnic group in the society that marginalizes my species but had to have it pointed out to me that I'm bros with most of the most powerful leaders of that society and don't do jack to help anyone else who's marginalized" Taltos about, you go with that?
She wasn't in character, even given outsider pov. She also thought Loiosh wasn't a proper familiar because he was a winged lizard creature. She was also basically some other woman, who was not Esme, and I had a strong feel that the writer hated the character. Vlad was not in any way Vlad. I have no idea why the writer wrote the fic.
I DON'T EVEN KNOW. All I know is that I know Esme Weatherwax, and that woman was no Esme Weatherwax. (Nor was Vlad Vlad, for that matter.)
Obvious authorial disdain for a character is often very off-putting. Any strong authorial opinion becomes a focal point of a story if it’s given a voice. It’s not inherently bad, it’s just basically the author begging for death of. If you really hate a character, sure, get it out of your system, but you can’t expect the audience to agree with you. That’s not their job. If you can’t bridge the gap between you and people who are not already totally in agreement with you, you’re going to create more disagreement by making an unconvincing argument that the audience can’t avoid because it’s centered in the story. Fanfic is probably going to attract people who like the featured characters, so that’s an extra disadvantage.
This is why I don't *write* characters I don't like, unless I can be completely fair to them. (Well as fair as you can be to a fictional character who may have been written or concieved poorly to begin with.) If you hate so and so, *don't write them* Easy!
Sounds like a variation on the entry about authorial tracts in How Not to Write a Novel: "Obsession, By Calvin Klein (you know he's Jewish, right?)" Also, writing characters you hate in spitefics can be fun, but you gotta make it clear to the audience that's what it is.
This sort of thing plagues Edelgard fanfiction and I fucking hate it. It's thankfully harder to find in the kinds of fic I like, but it still crops up at times even there. Which is why it's very nice, possibly even crucial, that there are Edelgard fan spaces in existence like the subreddit and the Edeleth discord. Every single open space is horrendously contentious concerning her, even months after release. I just want to read my fanfics written by people who like my character. Not see someone write a fic violently mischaracterizing her and her relationship with the Professor because they fucking hate her. I'm kind of pissed that we need to do shit like this avoid hate content and harassment.
You know what, I don't think I ever remember seeing a fic outright marked as spitefic, but that might actually catch my attention in a good way. I've definitely seen fics marked as character hate, but usually not for the main character(s). I do appreciate when authors tag it, though I imagine it's probably mostly an act of self defense. It lets me adjust my expectations accordingly. I don't generally consume media with any desire to pick a fight with it. I get distressed if I feel like it's picking a fight with itself and losing, or picking a fight with me for being the fool who thought she could just show up and enjoy this crap. On an unrelated note, I'm not sure if this is a gripe or a delight. But like, when you're really not into the fic and everything from the characterization down to the formatting is a disaster, but the author's treatment of the audience is just so damn charming that it melts your heart. They're like, "Please enjoy, I made it with love!" and you fucking try your honest best and feel improved as a person for having had the experience even if you didn't successfully read the fic. I guess that's more a delight, but it's a delight for grumpy people?
Spoiler: nsfw A penis ten inches long on a human is stretching likelihood (among other things) slightly, but not totally unreasonable. A penis ten inches WIDE, on a non-human creature that's only three and a half feet tall, is a bit much.
Another way to spot a writer who is either male or very underage: Spoiler: nsfw Pop Rocks on the mucous membranes. Holy fucking OW, yeast infection.
Spoiler: nsfw Sometimes I feel there ought to be a law saying that if you're going to claim that something esoteric is so much fun to put in your crotch you have to actually try it beforehand.
Spoiler: nsfw Pop rock blowjob candy is a thing, but I can't vouch for how good of an idea it is that they're a thing.
