I’ve been reminded of this because one of the hosts of a podcast I’ve gotten really into habitually does this! I think it’s probably a matter of it being a word that’s honestly really nonintuitive as far as the English language goes—there’s enough going on there that I suspect a lot of people are using the nonstandard pronunciation as a…crutch sounds mean and I don’t intend it that way at all, but as a way to get the point across without having to struggle with a set of sounds they may find physically difficult to make? Which is fascinating as hell, imo!

I actually did something very similar with the word “pretzel” as a kid—I knew how it was “supposed” to be pronounced, but I couldn’t get my fucking mouth to make the sounds happen, so I habitually said “prentzel” for years because that was somehow easier for me to say? We still sometimes call ‘em prentzels in my family as a bit of an in-joke.

Geezer is another one of those words that looks and sounds exactly like it should somehow and I love it.

TIL that the "-ward" in "awkward" is the same as the one in forward, backward, and toward, and that "awkward" originally meant "going the wrong way"!
