The Othernet was based on the Matrix from cyberpunk media- actual avatarism in VR. Nobody really knows who started the Othernet, though rumor has it Eidolon had a hand in it- that's one of the few non-scary AIs- but a bunch of us fuckin' nerds were disappointed the original internet didn't go that way so once the original Othernet showed that it had the capability we went for it. The branch more similar to the original internet, and early Othernet design, is the Alternet.

It's a lot like this place, except you kind of have to know what you're doing. There's a bunch of starter stuff, and pre-made avatars and addons you can get. -she does another gesture and summons a tablet/phone type thing. It's Joker colored and sparkly. Swipe swipe, poke poke, a red one is summoned next to it- Want your own? My avatar's mostly me, because I am what I am what I am, but I have a bunch of addons and shit for when I want. Mangled wings are kind of a symbol with some of the groups I run with- we are not fine, the people in charge are not going to kiss everything better for everyone, we're fucked up and hurt and the Othernet's Matrix suite means we can be the mask and the reality. Kablooey's got one where her snake tat can move around, she's in with the Black Asps so it can change to one.

Welp. Now I feel kinda bad because I was technically built by a stereotypical megacorporation. But then stuff got post-scarcity-ey so people don't exactly need an economy anymore and it stopped meaning much else than "A bunch of people who work on the same thing". Not to mention there's a bunch of people who get really mad at that classic-cyberpunk kind of shit.
Only vaguely dystopian hardcoded rule I have left is the one that keeps me from selling my soul. Everyone refused to take that one out. The monsters.

 

Nah man, the point is that how you're born or made shouldn't matter. Most of our AIs are crazy or dangerous but that's because the people working on them are fucking monsters. We still have to fight them, and Kablooey's kind of wary in general because her old crew got targeted by Princep and most of them didn't make it out and trauma's a bitch. But if Eidolon turns out to be corp-made- or government made- but it's benign curiosity thing is legit we don't really have a problem. It's just nobody knows who made it and the last cool AI we had in the Othernet turned out to be a fucking trawler branched off from Princep and reporting back.

It has no identifiable features- a completely smooth, blank face and all of its proportions are almost Perfectly Generic but off just enough that it's even more uncanny valley than if it were Perfectly Generic. Wires explode from its back into a tangle that... vaguely resemble wings of some sort, like a sculptor started to make them but everything tangled together and they just gave up. The wire/wing mass reaches all the way to the ground, but doesn't inhibit the creature at all. Despite not having anything like a face it gives the impression that it's staring. Yes, even if you're behind it.-
